A team of psychology majors at Lander University recently won third place in the quiz bowl competition sponsored by the South Carolina Psychological Association as part of its annual Academic Day activities.
The event, held at the College of Charleston, featured research and professional development presentations for students, and the quiz bowl matched teams from colleges and universities across the state in a test of their knowledge of psychology.
In addition to Lander and the College of Charleston, the other participating schools were The Citadel; Coker College; Furman University; The University of South Carolina at Beaufort and USC Columbia.
Dr. Jonathan Bassett, associate professor of psychology at Lander, said the teams answered 35 challenging multiple choice questions drawn from a variety of subject areas in psychology. Lander's team answered 26 questions correctly and finished just one point behind the two teams that tied for first place.
The College of Charleston won first place by defeating the team from Furman in a tiebreaker round.
Bassett, who is also president of the S.C. Psychological Association, said 10 Lander students, all members of the Psychology Club, attended the event. Members of the quiz bowl team were Megan Sloan, of Taylors; Josh Watt, of Piedmont; Jordan Coates, of Greenville; Jean Coen, of Simpsonville; and Jessica Simms, of Prospect Park, N.J.
