Laila, the Lander University Equestrian Center's newborn filly, explores her surroundings as her mom, Mouse, grazes nearby. Laila is the first foal born at the center since it opened last October.

When Lander University's Equestrian Center staff reported to work on May 24, they discovered that the number of horses on the property had grown by one.

Mouse, a quarter horse pony, had given birth to a female foal sometime overnight.

The mare belongs to Mary Hughston, coach of Lander's equestrian team.

The filly was given the name Laila. She is the first foal born at the Equestrian Center since the facility opened in October of 2009.

Plans are to eventually incorporate Mouse, the mare, into the center's hippotherapy program, which teaches disabled youngsters and adults to ride horses as a means of improving their neurological and sensory functions.
