Lander and Two Other Colleges Square Off in Sudden Death Psychology Quiz Bowl

Teams of students representing Lander University, College of Charleston and Furman University squared off in a sudden death playoff to decide the winner of the annual quiz bowl that was the main attraction of the South Carolina Psychological Association's Academic day on Nov. 5, at the former Inn on the Square in Uptown Greenwood.

College of Charleston won the showdown with Furman finishing second and Lander, third.

In all, 12 schools sent representatives to the daylong meeting. The other nine were Anderson University, Coker College, Francis Marion University, Newberry College, North Greenville University, The Citadel, Trident Technical College, the University of South Carolina at Beaufort and Clemson University.

The program began with a panel discussion about careers in psychology. Faculty members heard Dr. Gil Einstein, professor of psychology at Furman explain how to use the newest findings from cognitive science to improve classroom teaching practices.

Dr. Keith Campbell, professor and chair of the Psychology Department at the University of Georgia in Athens, delivered the keynote address.

The quiz bowl was held in two rounds with student teams answering questions on different facets of psychology. College of Charleston, Furman and Lander finished the second round in a three way-tie and that required a playoff to determine the winners.

Members of Lander's quiz bowl team were seniors Katie Crowley, Ashton Ready and Brittaney Hughes of Greenwood; Tyler Brown of Abbeville; Brittany Cheek of Newberry; Jeremy McMahon of Belton; and Zach Bargeloh of Charleston. Bargeloh is president of Lander's Psi Chi psychology honor society chapter and McMahan is vice president.

The S.C. Psychological Association has chosen Lander to host the Academic Day program again in 2010.
