Lander University has said goodbye to longtime friend and benefactor Marion Pinckney Carnell, the retired South Carolina legislator from Ware Shoals who is credited with playing a leading role in the university's growth and its enhanced statewide reputation. Carnell died on Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 22, at the age of 84.

Students from 14 colleges, including Lander University, gathered in Columbia recently to participate in the South Carolina Student Legislature (SCSL), an exercise that mirrored the work of the General Assembly. The students actually occupied the House and Senate chambers where they took part in sometimes spirited debate on a range of proposed legislation.

Wolf Stromberg, the Honorary Consul of the Federal Republic of Germany, will deliver the commencement address at Lander University's graduation ceremony, Saturday, Dec. 15, at 11 a.m., in the university's Finis Horne Arena. The graduating class will number 147 students.

Lander University's Old Main Singers and University Singers will join voices for a concert whose theme is "The People and Places of Christmas " on Thursday, Dec. 6, at 8 p.m., in Lander's Josephine B. Abney Cultural Center Auditorium. The concert is free and open to the public.
