Kariana Smith of McCormick died tragically in a boating accident in Lexington County in September of 2007, one year after she graduated from Lander University. On March 21, on what would have been her 26th birthday, her family and friends created a scholarship at Lander to honor her memory.

Lindsey Graham

United States Senator Lindsey Graham will deliver a motivational address to approximately 284 degree candidates at Lander University's spring commencement ceremonies, 11 a.m. Saturday, May 1, in the university's Horne Arena. During the ceremonies, the university will confer an honorary doctorate of laws upon Graham.

A group of students has launched Lander University's observance of Earth Week with the first of several clean-up activities. Members of the Environmental Sciences Students Organization (ESSO) recruited classmates to join them on Monday cleaning up trash in and along the banks of a creek that winds it way through the campus.

Lander University's cheerleading and dance teams came away with top awards in the Cheer Ltd. national competition, which was held at the Myrtle Beach Convention Center on March 20. The event attracted more than 4,000 all-star, recreation, school and collegiate cheerleaders and dancers. Lander was one of 25 universities and colleges that took part.

Lander University is playing host to a British educator as part of a faculty exchange in which a Lander professor will travel to England for a month of similar academic activities.

Lander University was well represented when the South Carolina Historical Association held its annual meeting in March at the Department of Archives and History in Columbia. Four students, five current and retired faculty members and a Lander graduate attended, and some had leading roles in the meeting.

Lander University student Andi Mills is often found sitting in front of her personal computer in the ground floor atrium of Lander's Carnell Learning Center, her companion, Mr. Tibbs, dozing nearby. Or she can be spotted walking to classes with Mr. Tibbs trotting along at her side. Mills is legally blind. Mr. Tibbs is a yellow Labrador Retriever, a guide dog who, as she puts it, "gets me were I have to be."

Lately when asked a simple question like " How are you," Lander University professor of music Dr. Paul Criswell responds, in his usual humor, with a countdown. For instance, a few weeks ago he might have responded "50 more days." But now that number is much smaller and each day his disposition grows more relaxed and serene. After all, he is retiring at the end of the semester. But Criswell is not moving on without one last chance to amuse and entertain with the power of song.
