These funds - which help students afford tuition, books, housing and, in some cases, study abroad - are available because of generous donors who are driven to help provide students with an education and the valuable tools needed for successful careers and fulfilling lives.

Lander University faculty member Lisa Brodhacker is a scientist whose goal is to make the perfect plastic telescope mirror for visible light. She cannot define what makes a plastic mirror perfect because she has not seen one. In fact, the scientific community has yet to build one.

Dr. Dava O'Connor began her career in education as a classroom teacher in Massachusetts more than 20 years ago. Since joining the Lander University faculty in 1998, she has helped mold and shape hundreds of students into classroom teachers for school districts in the Greenwood area and around the country.

Lander University's liaison at the University of Winchester, Dr. Roger Richardson, was on campus recently to inform students of opportunities to study abroad at his university in southern England. He conducted a series of short information sessions in classrooms, delivered a talk, which was open to all students, and hosted a short information session for students interested in graduate study at the University of Winchester.

The new film "S. Lander - His Life and Legacy," which chronicles the life of Lander University founder the Rev. Samuel Lander, premiered Saturday, Oct. 24, in the university's Josephine B. Abney Cultural Center Auditorium. From as far north as Toronto, Canada, and as far west as San Carlos, Calif., nearly 100 descendants of the Rev. Lander were on hand for the event.
