You see beauty where others may miss it, and something within you needs to express that beauty... on canvas... in clay... on paper... through the eye of the camera or on the computer screen.

The Art + Design program begins the same for each art student – with foundational studio art classes in drawing, design, and art history that prepare students for the study of art or design at the University level.  As a sophomore, students participate in studio classes featuring a broad range of media including ceramics, graphic design, painting, photography, and sculpture.  This important time of exploration gives students the insight to decide (or confirm) the direction for the remainder of his/her degree program.

Individual development, both artistically and personally, is a major focus of the Lander Art + Design Department.  The Art faculty, all professional artists as well as engaged professors, is committed to challenging, encouraging and inspiring each student to reach his/her personal potential.  The goal is to arm students with the skills, insight and understanding they will need to develop innovative solutions in a rapidly changing creative world.

The Art + Design programs provide:

  • Understanding of composition in both 2D and 3D applications
  • Experience with a broad range of art media
  • Mastery of art making techniques
  • Foundational knowledge of art history from a global perspective
  • Visual literacy
  • Critical and creative thinking skills
  • Opportunities for internships, study abroad, and field trips.
