Though the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has prevented Lander from holding this ceremony, Lander has created this webpage to announce the names of this year's award recipients.

Creative Writing Award

From Abbeville, Amber contributed the winning work of fiction to New Voices student literary journal. She is a member of the Honors College and the Alpha Chi National Honor Society. Amber is also an intern for the Lander Forum newspaper.

Originally from Somers, Connecticut, Angelina has immersed herself since transferring to Lander. She is an Honors College member, president of the English Club, and a Writing Center tutor. Angelina was featured in the Blue Granite Review and presented at several academic conferences, and she manages social media for an online retailer.

Helena is leader and committee chair in the Teaching Fellows and completed a Policy Research Fellowship with the Lander President’s Office. This six-episode radio drama was originated by the late Jackson Wise and his team has completed the project in his honor.

Like Megan, she is cohost of 2poc (which stands for 2 people of color), she is part of the Historitorical team, and she is an active content creator with LUX multimedia studios

From Bishopville, SC, Joel is an Honors College member and Writing Center tutor. He serves as training director for XLR Lander Radio. Joel hosts the XLR show Know News and the true-crime parody podcast The Elephant in the Room, and he is a driving force behind the Historitorical radio drama. Finally, Joel’s animations on YouTube have gotten nearly 100,000 views.

Rebekah displayed remarkable kindness, camaraderie, and generosity this year. She also maintains a gallery space in North Carolina to sell her work and participates in many exhibits, including a solo show at the Marlborough County Museum in 2020. On campus, Rebekah serves as Student Director and Manager of Lander’s Monsanto Gallery.

Originally from Costa Rica, Ashley is known for a deliberate process leading to ambitious artwork. Her work with her mentor allowed her to work on projects like ECOS with Palmetto Luna Arts. Ashley recently collaborated on a commission piece, and contributed to the Peachbelt Conference Exhibit and the Collegiate Exhibition at the Spartanburg Library Headquarters.

Katherine treats every project as a challenge. She invests huge amounts of time in her work, which shows in the exceptional quality of her finished sculptures. Katherine has been accepted into many exhibits, including professional juried shows and a year-long outdoor sculpture exhibit. She also works as a studio assistant and even ran a marathon.

Kaitlyn is a nursing major whose Lander highlights include working with her ICU preceptor at Self Regional and serving in their COVID vaccine clinic.

Conway, SC

A psychology major, Skyler is a researcher in Lander’s Stress and Cognition Lab and presented her team’s findings at the National Conference for Undergraduate Research and Georgia Undergraduate Research in Psychology Conference. Skyler also spent a semester abroad at the University of Winchester.

Moore, SC

A biology major, Anesha presented research on the effects of caffeine on embryonic development at the Upstate Research Symposium, and she is a member of the Blue Key and Tri Beta Honor Societies. Anesha also spent a summer abroad studying at the University of the Aegean in Greece.

A psychology major, Hallie served as a psych tutor and an officer in her Phi Mu chapter. She interned with the Guidance office at RA Rucker Middle School and has been accepted to the accelerated graduate program for school counseling at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

A psychology major, Amanda is presenting her research on rape myth acceptance and LGB identity at the Upstate Research Symposium. She volunteered extensively for Mental Health America of Greenville County, working their Crisisline. Accepted to several different grad schools, Amanda has chosen to enter the M.Ed. program for Clinical Mental Health Counseling at Winthrop.

Walterboro, SC
A biology major, Sydney is presenting her research on the efficacy of antimicrobial plant extracts at the 2021 Upstate Research Symposium. Sydney interned for a low country vet clinic and worked as a Lander lab assistant, and she has also served as an officer in the Tri-beta biological honor society.

A double major in English and psychology, Jay spent a semester studying abroad at the University of Winchester in England. Jay is also a member of Psi Chi Psychological Honor Society and Sigma Tau Delta English Honor Society, and has presented research at the Lander Student Academic Symposium.

A double major in Spanish and Business Administration, Caroline studied abroad in Madrid at Tandem Escuela Internaciónal, and will soon be presenting research at the Southern Regional Collegiate Honors Conference. She is currently Digital Marketing Director for The Frilly Frog, an online children’s boutique whose sales have grown 125% under her direction.

A psychology major who is originally from Amarillo, Texas, Taylor spent a summer studying the Spanish language in Buenos Aries and Mendoza, Argentina. She is a dedicated animal lover who is graduating with minors in both biology and in children and family studies.

An early childhood education major from Greenville, Carson was also a member of the Lander Equestrian Team. She earned her certificate in Teaching English as a Foreign Language while studying abroad in Madrid, Spain.

A psychology major, Avi worked for Camp Dogwood as an art teacher for the blind and visually impaired, and she is currently interning at Harley Funeral Home. She served as a psychology supplemental instructor and teaching assistant and as an officer in Lander SPECTRUM.

A political science major, Jake interned for Sen. Tim Scott’s Washington DC office. He is a Presidential Ambassador and leader in several student organizations, and served as Student Body Vice President and Lander Man of the Year. Jake was also a South Carolina Representative to 2020 & 21 College Student Congress of the Henry Clay Center for Statesmanship.

A political science major, Caroline interned for Rep. John McCravy, serving as campaign manager for his successful reelection and now as his legislative assistant. She also works part time for local law office and is active in Alpha Chi and Pi Sigma Alpha honor societies. Caroline plans to attend the Duncan School of Law at Lincoln Memorial University in TN. A sociology major, Brooke is presenting her research on motivations and barriers to volunteerism at the 2021 National Conference on Undergraduate Research. A leader in BCM and president of Lander LOGICS, Brooke also served as a volunteer tutor for at-risk children and interned with the International Rescue Committee’s adult education program.

An exercise science major and athlete, Christina is particularly active in campus life. She recently presented research in biomechanics at the Southeast American College of Sports Medicine. Christina interned for Uncharted Sports Ministries, MedEx Academy, North Greenville University, and Greenwood High Athletics.
