ABOUT THE BAND:
Formed in 1962 by Lander alumnus John McElrath, the Swingin’ Medallions have entertained audiences for generations, performing throughout the nation and thousands of venues.
The band was made famous by its 1966 hit album, “Double Shot of My Baby’s Love,” and it remains the Medallions’ signature song. It was followed with hits, “She Drives Me Out of My Mind,” and “Hey, Hey Baby”, featured at their 2004 Gator Bowl Halftime Show performance. The band has released countless other singles through Capitol and Smash Records, and they have continued to tour into 2025.
John McElrath passed away in 2018, but his legacy lives on through his two sons, Shane and Shawn, who are current members of the band, along with Chris Crowe, Josh Snelling, John Smith Buchan, Richard Loper, Marcus Gullen, Ronnie Goldman, Mackenzie Walden, and Joe Morris, the band’s original drummer.

Chicago Tribune nationally syndicated columnist Bob Greene wrote an article titled “The Swingin’ Medallion View of U.S. History.” He summed up America’s love affair with “Double Shot” with his discovery of the song being played and sold in the gift shop of the Smithsonian Institute. When inquiring as to why it was available in the nation’s foremost repository of history, the clerk replied, “Because it’s as much a part of our history as anything else we sell.”
