The University of Winchester (UW) is a small institution located in a small city approximately 65 miles southwest of London.  Winchester is one of the oldest cathedral cities in England.  It was the capitol for Saxon and Norman kings and the center of King Alfred's Wessex.  Jane Austen lived and wrote here and is buried in Winchester Cathedral.

The university serves 5,500 students, 250 of whom are international students from over 30 countries.  The university is a 10-minute walk from the railway station and a 20-minute walk from Winchester Cathedral and the town center.  The London Waterloo station is an hour away by train, and there are usually four trains each hour.  Take a subway across London to the St. Pancras station, and Paris is another 3 hours away via the Eurostar train (185 mph) through the Channel Tunnel.

New international students at UW attend an Orientation Program before the start of the semester.  The program gives students a chance to enroll and register with for their courses, to settle in, participate in a Britain Today program, make friends, and meet their lecturers.  All students become members of the Society for International Students which organizes a variety of  social events.  Twenty-one Lander students have studied at Winchester since the fall of 2006.

2009 - 2010 PROGRAM DATES:  Fall semester (includes orientation week): September 21 - December 18.  Spring semester (includes one-day orientation): February 5 - May 28.  Note that the spring semester includes a four-week Easter break, during which time most international students travel in the UK or in Europe.

APPROXIMATE COST: $4400 tuition + $2200 for room and part-board (provides a five-day/week declining balance meal plan) + $300 food + $1600 incidentals + $850 airfare = $9350 (compare to the estimated $9100 for a semester at Lander).  Students who plan to study at Winchester during the spring semester should add $1000 to cover the cost of the four-week break at Easter (not covered in the housing or meal plan estimate) plus the cost of their travel.  Most American students at UW use this time to travel in the UK and/or Europe.

APPLICATION DEADLINE (thru Lander's Study Abroad Office):

- for the fall semester: April

- for the spring semester: October
