Study Abroad

Information for Students

To study at an institution abroad for a regular or summer semester:

  1. Review the information on this website and linked web pages.  If you want more information about study abroad opportunities not mentioned on these web pages, spend some time in Lander's Study Abroad Library.  It is open by appointment, contact studyabroad@lander.edu

  2. Print and fill out the Study Abroad Preliminary Information Form.  Request an appointment (studyabroad@lander.edu) to meet with the Director of Study Abroad.  Bring your completed Preliminary Information Form to this meeting.

  3. Make an appointment to meet with your academic advisor to discuss your study abroad plans.  Your advisor can assist you in choosing the courses that will readily transfer back to Lander University.

  4. Discuss your plans and the extra costs involved with your parents.  Discuss your regular financial aid (scholarships, loans, etc.) with the Office of Financial Aid to determine if any of it will not apply to study abroad.  Discuss the availability of additional study abroad scholarship funds with the Director of Study Abroad.

  5. Discuss your plans with your friends.  Maybe they would like to go abroad with you.

  6. Choose a program and begin the application process.  Keep in constant touch with the Director of Study Abroad, who will assist you in meeting all deadlines for applications, payments, etc.

  7. If you are planning to study in England, print out and read How University Study in the UK is Different

  8. Once you have made a decision to go abroad, apply for a passport if you do not already have one

  9. Print out and read Some General Advice Regarding Traveling and Living Abroad.  Go to the U. S. Department of State website and read the information mentioned in this document.

  10. Print out and read the Lander legal document.  Show this document to your parent or guardian.  If you are under 18 years of age, your parent or guardian must sign.
  11. Purchase appropriate insurance.  Lander requires that semester-abroad students purchase medical and repatriation insurance from Cultural Insurance Services International through Lander's Study Abroad Office.  The cost of the recommended insurance for students 25 or younger is $31/month.  This insurance is automatically included in the cost of every Lander summer study tour.  Click here for more information about this insurance.

  12. You must attend a pre-travel briefing session as scheduled by the Director of Study Abroad.  Simply signing the forms and turning them in is not sufficient.  Bring the Lander legal document  and your passport to this briefing.

  13. Semester-abroad students should keep in touch with the Director of Study Abroad via email while abroad.  Consider taking lots of photographs and writing an article for Lander's student paper when you return.

To participate in a Lander summer study tour:

  1. Discuss the tour and the associated courses with the professor(s) who will lead the tour.  Fill out the necessary forms and make the deposits and payments as directed.

  2. If you have substantial financial need as determined by the Lander Office of Student Financial Aid, additional scholarship aid may be available if you are paying tuition for summer school course credit.

  3. Continue at step 8) above.
