SPRING SEMESTER RECOMMENDATION –

UNIVERSITY OF NORTHAMPTON

The University of Northampton (UN) is a medium-sized institution located in Northampton, a small city approximately 75 miles northwest of London in central England.  Northamptonshire is a county of beautiful farmland, rolling hills, numerous lakes, canals, and rivers, and many pictureresque villages and historic homes.  The university serves 6,000 students, 500 of whom are international students from over 80 countries.  A thriving International Students Society arranges a regular program of cultural and social events.

The American Studies program at UN sends students to the College of Charleston, to Coastal Carolina University, and to Winthrop University for their study abroad experience.  To accommodate students coming from South Carolina, UN offers a British Studies program during its short winter term and Lander students may take part in this program.  Each SC student enrolls in a core course in British Studies and also selects 3-4 additional courses that are taken with the regularly enrolled Northampton students.  At the end of the term, SC students may leave their extra belongings on campus while they travel in England or Europe during the three-week Easter break.  Eight Lander students have studied at UN during the past four years.

2009 PROGRAM DATES:  January 12 – March 27
Lander students will fly over on January 7 with students from other SC universities and return in late March or early April.  Students may choose their return dates.

APPROXIMATE COST:  $6000 (tuition and room) + $1000 food + $1500 incidentals + $850 airfare = $9350 (about the same as a semester at Lander).  Note that students may continue to utilize their UN dorm rooms during the 3-week Easter break which follows the 10-week academic term and many students choose to travel in the UK and/or Europe during this time.  Students should budget approximately $600 for food and other expenses plus the cost of their travel if they plan to do this.

Application deadline thru Lander's Study Abroad Office: October 15, 2008
