Brighton Summer Program
SUMMER PROGRAM – UNIVERSITY OF BRIGHTON
The University of Brighton is a large university of 15,000 students on the southeast coast of England. Brighton grew over time from a medieval fishing village into a major Victorian seaside resort. It is still a major resort and convention city. By rail, Brighton is 90 minutes from London and 30 minutes from Gatwick International Airport. Ferries connect nearby Newhaven with France, and the high-speed rail service through the Channel Tunnel to Paris stops at nearby Ashford.
The University’s Falmer Campus, approximately 5 miles from Brighton, is the focus of activities for American students. Frequent bus and rail service connect Falmer with Brighton and with the historic old town of Lewes nearby. The University’s American Office is located in Alfriston House on the Falmer Campus. Housing for visiting American students is also located on the Falmer Campus and consists of apartment-style housing (six to eight single bedrooms with a shared kitchen/living area).
The Faculty of Education and Sport hosts an annual summer school for American students enrolled in graduate and undergraduate programs. This summer school lasts about five weeks and takes place in mid-summer. Teaching includes a mixture of lectures, seminars, and workshop sessions with an emphasis on small group meetings and individual tutorials. Undergraduate students may enroll for six hours of credit. A required British Culture course forms the common core for all students. Field trips - day and weekend trips to London, East Sussex, Paris, Oxford and Stratford-upon-Avon, Rye, and Dublin - are available as optional extras.
This summer program is especially recommended for students in Lander’s College of Education. Each year, Dr. Jill Hunter, Professor of Education at Lander, joins the University of Brighton faculty and participates in teaching courses in the summer program. For details of the Lander courses which are offered (two courses for undergraduate students and four courses for graduate students), please click here .
