Law Enforcement

The Lander University Community is nestled in the community of Greenwood, S.C. Greenwood is a safe community, but it is not crime free. No community can make that claim. Lander University provides a 24 hour certified police force to enforce Federal, State, Local Laws and University rules and regulations and administering the university vehicle registration and parking policies. The Lander University Police Department is directed by the Chief of Police under the division of Student Affairs headed by the Vice-President of Student Affairs.

The Lander University Police Department offers educational and crime prevention programs for students, faculty and staff. The Lander University Police Department is committed to community policing. Officers work diligently to develop partnerships with students, faculty and staff in an effort to increase awareness and a positive exchange of information.

 
Fire Safety

Fire fighting services are provided 24 hours a day by the City of Greenwood Fire Department. To report a fire on campus, call 8-911. Fire inspections, fire drills and fire safety programs are conducted by Lander University Police Officers, Housing Officials and Administrative Officials.

 
Emergency Action Plan

Lander University has a formal Emergency Action Plan which established procedures that will aid officials in determining the best use of resources to manage disasters, minimize loss of life and injury and protect resources and facilities. The President of Lander University or his designees will activate the plan, mobilizing key officials and reporting to the designated emergency operations center. this plan includes procedures for communications with those immediately affected and with the general public.

 
Miscellaneous

Escort Service - Lander University Police Department will not provide off campus escort services, but will continue to provide on campus escorts for students, staff, and faculty for security or medical reasons. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Chief Ray Manley at 388-8222.


Emergency Phones - Emergency speaker telephones are located across campus. These phones are wired with emergency buttons that will automatically dial University Police. Please report any problems you may encounter with these phones to the University Police at 388-8222.


Reporting a Crime - All members of the Lander University community share in the responsibility of preventing crime on campus. Everyone should report all crimes and suspicious activities, whether you are a victim or a witness. The Lander University Police Department  is the primary campus authority to whom crimes should be reported by calling 388-8222 or 8-911 in case of an emergency. When you call the University Police, be prepared to provide this information:

1 - Your Name

2 - The location of the incident

3 - Description of the suspect(s)

4 - Description of any vehicles involved

5 - Necessity for medical assistance

 

Sexual Assault

The prevention, investigation and prosecution of sexual assault is a high priority for the Lander University Police Department and the Student Affairs administration. Lander University strongly encourages victims to report sexual assault but will provide, assistance and support regardless of the victim’s decision to proceed with formal charges. Public Information

Lander University is committed to providing students, faculty, staff and visitors with accurate information they need to protect themselves and their property. Information is disseminated in several ways.

 

** In addition to this publication, information about University Police, Crime Prevention, How to report a crime and resources available to crime victims is published in the Lander University Student Handbook. Daily campus crime logs are available at the University Police Department.

 

** The Publications Office and Student Newspaper assists University Police in disseminating information about crime through local media and news services and through the campus newspaper, The forum.

 

** Officers work with the student media to provide students, faculty and staff with accurate information on crimes and crime prevention.

 

** Campus safety topics are also covered in new student orientation and in

     residence halls throughout the year.
