Greek Life

Overview

Lander has numerous national Greek organizations which are governed by "umbrella groups".  The  Inter-Fraternity Council (IFC) governs the historically white male fraternities, National Panhellenic Council  (NPC) governs the historically white female sororities and  National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC) governs the historically African-American fraternities and sororities. Each chapter is unique, with its own traditions, customs, and activities, but each shares common principles of friendship, scholarship, leadership, and community service.   Check out each organization and talk to the members about their scholarship program, leadership development, community service, and brotherhood or sisterhood.

Stressing academics, friendship, leadership, and community service, each Greek Organization tries to be more than just a "club." Greek membership provides numerous leadership, service, and social opportunities for Lander students. Every organization allows students with common interests to come together for a chance to grow, participate, and contribute.    The most cherished asset among all Greek members is the intangible asset of sisterhood or brotherhood which is the foundation of sorority and fraternity life. Both are difficult to explain, but they can be characterized by their most common and identifiable element:  friendship. Sisterhood and brotherhood are not learned; they are experienced. The friendships made today form the basis for the lasting memories and relationships of tomorrow.    Sorority or fraternity membership should not be taken lightly as it is a lifetime commitment; a commitment that will repay you “ten-fold” if you put forth the effort.

College life is about academics, meeting new people, sharing new ideas and learning about new cultures.   Just as every Lander student is different, so too does each sorority and fraternity have its own personality. Each one is unique yet they are alike in that they all work together in making the Greek system, Lander University, and the Greenwood community a better place for everyone. It is up to you as an individual to see which sorority or fraternity is right for you.

RUSH/Recruitment/Intake is different for each of the three umbrella groups.   The National Panhellenic Conference and Inter-Fraternity Council will have different recruitment/rush weeks while NPHC chapters typically set their own individual recruitment dates. Check with the Student Activities Office or the individual chapter when you arrive on campus this fall for recruitment dates.

If you are interested in becoming a part of the Lander Greek system, take the time to find a chapter that you are comfortable with and the one that provides the environment and opportunities you are seeking and…"Go Greek."
