Summer continuing education courses cover a broad landscape of subjects

May 03, 2011

Lander University is accepting applications for its summer continuing education courses, the first of which will begin late in May and continue through August. Coordinator Shelley Grund said there are more than two dozen courses on the schedule, plus five professional development offerings and Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) preparation classes for high school students. Because of their popularity, some courses have limits on enrollment.

Courses include instruction in digital photography, portrait drawing, barbecue skills, piano and weaving. There will be a one-day session on computer repair and service and other classes introducing participants to Microsoft Excel, Excel intermediate and Windows 7.

Conversational Spanish, Spanish medical terminology and an introduction to the Russian language will be offered.

Other courses include diplomacy of the Civil War, an overview of Islam, prosecuting a civil lawsuit, a survey of the Arthurian legend and writing a family history.

In the category of fitness, health and fun, there will be classes on the philosophy of everyday living and improving one’s life, introduction to sailing, tennis for beginners and intermediate players, and two sessions at Lander’s Equestrian Center to teach basic horsemanship skills to children 6 to 13.

Professional development courses include the FastTrac® learning program to help entrepreneurs improve and grow their businesses. Other sessions will focus on international trade for small businesses, QuickBook for beginners, how to craft successful publicity and keyboarding.

SAT PRO is an intensive six-week follow-up class for high school students who completed the SAT Doctor program last spring and seniors planning to take the Scholastic Aptitude Test in October.

Grund said her office is also planning an exciting Christmas and New Year’s holiday trip to Prague and Vienna in December.
