Student Testimonials

From the first time I toured Lander University I knew it was the university for me. I have always had a passion for helping others and teaching special needs seemed like the perfect opportunity. My experience here at Lander has helped me acquire in-depth knowledge of the teaching field and receive a more hands-on education. I get to experience real classroom settings and work with special needs students. My professors have given me all the tools and knowledge I need to go out and teach others. Being a member of the Student Council for Exceptional Children, I have gained a deeper knowledge of special education and seen the challenges that teachers face. Going out into the schools, I feel confident in accepting any challenges that I may face. Lander has taught me how to be a leader, a teacher and a lifelong learner.

I am from a little town in Mexico called Ciudad Valles, which means "City of Valleys." I am an early childhood education major, and I chose Lander because my sister graduated from this institution and she recommended it to me. I chose my major because I love working with children, whether it is teaching them or just playing with them and having fun. I began my higher education at a technical college and then transferred to Lander after two years. The transition was very smooth and I immediately began taking early childhood education courses. At first I was not sure about the major I chose. I heard many people talk about job uncertainty for teachers and I also doubted my own capabilities in that profession; but, the professors at Lander had a passion for teaching children, which had an impact on me and influenced my outlook on teaching. Because of their passion, I know that teaching is not about the paycheck, it is about the opportunity you have to make a difference in someone’s life, no matter how young they may be. Lander has helped me develop as a person and has opened many opportunities for me to become the best teacher I can be.

My time at Lander is molding me into a future educator and a leader. The professors and my fellow students make learning enjoyable as I am challenged to become the teacher I was created to be. Spending a lot of my time on campus, I am surrounded by people that are truly passionate about what they do and are always willing to go above and beyond. Through the Teaching Fellows program and LAEYC I have been given many opportunities to get involved in the local Greenwood schools, expanding my range of experiences with young children. As co-president of my sorority I am being equipped with the skills I need to be a successful leader. I have entered into many lifelong friendships with the friends I have made at Lander that will continue after I graduate. Getting involved on campus was easy to do on such a small and friendly campus. I enjoy being busy and Lander was the perfect school for me to get involved and make the most of my college experience.

As I entered my first semester at Lander University in the fall of 2012, I did not know what to expect. I was coming in as a transfer student from Clemson University, to be part of the men’s basketball team. I was very excited to get to know people and start my Lander career off the right way. The faculty, students, and staff were all so welcoming and it was an easy transition for me. From the professors to students and the staff as a whole, I love the family like atmosphere. As a member of the men’s basketball team, it has been a wonderful experience. I have the honor to play under a great head coach in Jeff Burkhamer and Steve Roberts, who demand nothing but the best out of me. My overall experience at Lander so far has been a great one and I look forward to bigger and better things.
