The curriculum

The Department of Physical Education and Exercise Studies offers two distinct degree programs, each focused on providing diverse educational and practical opportunities.Sports Medicine

Exercise Science

This program is designed to prepare students for careers in: public, private and corporate programs; physical, occupational and cardiac rehabilitation programs; and fitness and conditioning programs. Students will also be well-prepared for graduate study in areas such as cardiac rehabilitation, exercise physiology, and physical and occupational therapy.

You will gain an understanding of the role of exercise and nutrition in maintaining lifetime physical fitness, and you will become well-versed in the physiological/biochemical changes occurring in the human organism when placed under physical stress. Along with training in the procedures used to assess physical fitness, cardiovascular endurance, body composition, muscular strength and flexibility, you will learn to prepare effective exercise programs. You will also learn to conduct and present your own research.

CounselorPhysical Education-Teacher Education

Through this course of study, you will be prepared for teaching and coaching careers in K-12 school settings. After meeting the requirements of Lander's Department of Teacher Education and the Department of Physical Education and Exercise Studies, you will be admitted into the teacher education program and will venture out into area classrooms for student teaching opportunities.

As a physical education major, you will be taught to identify, develop and utilize a variety of instructional methods and assessment tools that address the diverse needs of all students. As a graduate, you will be certified to plan, implement and evaluate a total school program of physical education in accordance with national and state content standards.
