Student Testimonials

I chose Lander University because it has one of the best psychology programs in South Carolina, and several of my closest mentors recommended the school. Lander offers a unique experience that allows students to interact with professors on a level that is not universally available at larger institutions. The instructors have a lot of knowledge about their respective fields, and each offers an interesting and unique perspective. The students, too, are incredible and I am grateful to be surrounded by some of the most intelligent and talented peers I have ever met. I enjoy working as a teaching assistant for the department, and the experience I have gained has been invaluable. I am also a member of Psi Chi, the International Honor Society in psychology, and I will serve as president of Lander’s chapter next year. During my time at Lander, I have gained knowledge and skills that will help lead me to a successful career.

When searching for schools, it was important for me to find a university that was small enough to promote mentoring relationships with faculty, but large enough to provide diverse opportunities to further my academic career. I chose psychology as my major because I am interested in studying human attitudes and behaviors, and I have a genuine desire to help people through research and counseling. As a psychology major, I have held leadership roles in Psi Chi, represented my department within Student Government, served as a teaching assistant and conducted independent research. My leadership experiences, combined with the guidance and support from my professors, have helped me develop into a well-rounded student and individual.

My experiences at Lander have helped to shape me into who I am today. I’ve spent a total of five years pursuing two degrees here. So, it’s no understatement to say that my time at Lander has been instrumental in defining my life’s path. With the help and advice of a few professors, I have been able to focus my desires in my life. One day, I want to teach and conduct research in psychology. If it were not for my advisor’s assistance, I would not have known how to begin to pursue that goal. I have gained invaluable experience and friendships in my time here, and could easily see myself returning if the psychology department was to offer a graduate program.

The faculty, staff and students at Lander have always made me feel like a person and not just a number. When I first toured Lander I knew it was where I belonged; a smaller school where I could maintain the one on one experience I grew used to at my private high school. I especially liked coming to EXPO the summer before freshman year, which is where I met my first roommate and now best friend. This experience also gave me the chance to get familiar with the campus, fellow students and staff members. Before coming to Lander I planned on majoring in Psychology, and meeting the professors only strengthened that decision. I love going to class, these professors love what they teach and that makes for a great learning environment. It’s a really great feeling when the teacher knows your name and has a personal interest in your learning.
