Student Opportunities

Learning beyond the classroom

Few majors offer more opportunities for extracurricular involvement than mass communications and media studies - a fact that is obvious from the moment you arrive at the university. One of the advantages of choosing Lander is that you won't have to wait until your junior or senior year to get your feet wet in journalism, or media production.

Your training will be packed with opportunities to identify and develop your individual talents, whether it's production in radio, television and print journalism, web design, speech or performance. More information on career opportunities.

Opportunities include:

  • Joining the staff of LUX TV, the university television station; XLR-Lander Radio, the campus radio station; and The Forum, news magazine. Learn more about Lander Media Outlets.
  • Taking part in the annual Lander Film Festival and Student Short Film Competition.
  • Getting involved with the South Carolina Press Association, South Carolina Broadcasters Association, or the Speech Communication Association.
  • Interning with area community theatres, radio and television stations, newspapers or advertising and print agencies.

Department Awards

LibraryAwards are granted annually to outstanding university students from all disciplines during a ceremony each spring.

The following are awards presented by the university's Department of Mass Communications and Media Studies:

  • Mass Communications and Media Studies Discipline Award
Given annually by the mass communications and media studies faculty to the most outstanding senior majoring in mass communications as evidenced by high academic achievement, leadership and promise in the field of mass communications or media studies. The recipient must be expected to graduate within the calendar year of the award ceremony.

Life after Lander

The fields of mass communications and media studies can be highly competitive, but the fact is many people establish successful and rewarding careers in communications and entertainment - and you don't necessarily have to move to New York or California to land those jobs.

After completing their undergraduate studies at Lander, our students have gone on to earn Master's and Ph.D. degrees. Some have found homes in newsrooms in Greenville, S.C., Savannah, GA., and Asheville, N.C. Others are working as managing editors, account executives, webmasters and production engineers with businesses and agencies across the nation. Still others have ventured onto stages and movie sets from Atlanta to Los Angeles, and some have used their skills to help others as teachers and speech pathologists.
