November 08, 2011
Smith-Cox and HammondAli Hammond, of Saluda, a student in the Lander University Master of Arts in Teaching art education program, was recently awarded the Liz Smith-Cox Scholarship -- which supports the development of aspiring art educators -- by the South Carolina Art Education Association. Hammond is the fourth Lander MAT student to have received the award since 2003. Smith-Cox, a well-known artist and educator, poses with Hammond at the SCAEA fall conference in Greenville, where Hammond received the award. Associate professor of art Dr. Linda Neely, Lander visual arts department chair and coordinator of Lander's art education program, praised Hammond as "an exceptional young woman, full of energy and wit, and focused desire to be an art teacher." Hammond's award, Neely said, continues Lander's tradition of being "a strong presence in art education in the state." (Photo by John Gullick)
