Chair's Message

I found I could say things with color and shapes that I couldn't say any other way - things I had no words for. ~Georgia O'Keeffe

An artist often sees things that are not present, whether in terms of materials, content or history, and recreates it in a unique and personal way. Our world today is increasingly visual and as such, is in need of qualified, educated individuals to fill the roles of professional artists, designers, teachers, curators and consultants.

Accredited by the National Association of Schools of Art and Design (NASAD), the Lander Art Department is comprised of a proud group of caring, passionate and nationally recognized artists, academicians and professional businessmen and women. Above all, passion drives each faculty member, which in turn results in students who have the same fervent attitude to their artistic endeavors. Each faculty member is deeply involved in the artistic practice they teach. Students are therefore able to see and learn from the work developed by their mentors on a very personal level. Since class sizes are small, this dedicated faculty is able to develop student's abilities to think critically, master core principles and distinguish themselves in visual capacities. A cross-disciplinary approach to fine art and design makes for well-rounded artists capable of facing challenges with a wide range of skills in drawing and design, ceramics, painting, sculpture, printmaking, photography, or graphic design.

We have an amazing group of art students here at Lander, and I welcome you to come find out more about the department and the possibility of joining our family. Please explore our website to learn more about our department and the opportunities we offer our students. If you are planning to visit the campus, we would be happy to arrange for you to sit in on one of our classes or to meet with some of our students or faculty.

Please feel free to contact us with any questions about the department. You can reach me at or visit our offices located in the Josephine B. Abney Cultural Center.

We hope to meet you.
