As an environmental science major or minor, you will have many opportunities to supplement your classroom and laboratory work with experiences in the field.  For example, you may participate in a student internship in industry, consulting or governmental regulation, earning up to four credit hours in the process. You may want to participate in research collaborations with Lander biology or chemistry faculty.  Lander also maintains teaching and research relationships with the Belle W. Baruch Laboratory for Marine and Coastal Research at Georgetown, S.C., and with the Highlands Biological Station at Highlands, N.C.  We will also make sure you are aware of summer educational and work opportunities at institutions across the country.

Increasing public concern over environmental issues has resulted in the enactment, at all governmental levels, of legislation to protect the nation's air, soil, and water.  This legislation has created a demand for highly trained field and laboratory technicians, applied scientists, lawyers, managers, executives, and engineers.

Surveys conducted by Lander during the development of our environmental science program revealed a strong demand across the state for graduates trained in this field.  As a graduate with a major in environmental science, you will be prepared for field and laboratory positions in industry, consulting firms, or regulatory agencies.  Your degree can also serve as an excellent foundation for graduate work.  A minor in environmental science, combined with majors in business, political science, or sociology, provides the basis for careers in environmental management, law or planning.
