Programs of Study
Chemistry
The study of chemistry involves many objects that we encounter everyday: plastic bags, antacid tablets, vinegar, and moth balls. And some that we don't: lasers, superconductors, and buckeyballs. At Lander, we will open your eyes to the chemistry around you and help prepare you for a respected, professional career as a chemist.
Lander offers a well-rounded curriculum that covers the full range of chemical interests - analytical, biochemistry, inorganic, organic, and physical. Also, a five year Dual Chemical Engineering degree program of study is available with Clemson University.
Non-Degree programs in Pre-Dentistry, Pre-Medicine, and Pre-Pharmacy are available for students interested in professional occupations. Students would major in either chemistry or environmental science and then take the required courses for admission into a professional school. Offerings in physics and physical science are supportive courses for professional, pre-professional, and general education areas of study.
With our low student/faculty ratio (about 12:1 in upper division chemistry courses) you will receive plenty of individual attention from your professors. Our small classes will also give you a chance to take full advantage of our up-to-date chemistry labs which are equipped with many of the instruments necessary to build a solid educational foundation in chemistry - instruments that include spectrophotometers, chromatographs, mass spectrometers, and lasers.
At Lander, you will be studying under professors who are more than practicing chemists - they are excellent teachers. All four full-time chemistry faculty members hold doctoral degrees and one has received Lander's Distinguished Professor Award for excellence in teaching.
