A big part of your Lander education in math, computer science, or chemistry will be practical application. We feel the best way to learn about computers is to work with them; the best way to understand mathematical principles is to apply them; and the best way to experience chemistry is in a real laboratory. That's why we give you plenty of opportunities to learn outside traditional classroom settings.

Through Lander's Cooperative Education program, for example, you can combine classroom instruction with actual work experience in area businesses and industries, receiving both academic credit and a paycheck for your efforts. Several students have received opportunities to study abroad at Furman University in Greenville, S.C., at Oak Ridge National Laboratories in Oak Ridge, TN, and as far away as Plymouth Polytechnic in Plymouth, England through the Lander University Honors Program.

Or you might be interested in a part-time job in the new science laboratories as a lab assistant, polishing your skills as you help others develop theirs. Maybe you would like to "get your hands dirty" with the new Campus Wide Computer Network which has recently been put in place. Opportunities abound at Lander.

You'll also have a chance to get to know faculty members on an informal basis and to socialize with other students who share your interests by becoming involved in the Lander student chapter of the American Chemical Society, the Lander student chapter of the Mathematical Association of America, or the Lander student chapter of the Association for Computing Machinery. These groups regularly hold social events and sponsor special speakers and field trips.
