The Lander Student Affiliate chapter of the American Chemical Society is primarily set up for science majors but all students are welcome to participate in the chapter's activities. The chapter allows students to become more involved in extracurricular activities and as a way to become better acquainted with the faculty and upper level science students at Lander University. The purpose of the chapter is to supply the students with the knowledge of what chemistry is all about and the opportunities present for chemistry in the real world. Also, the chapter discusses and helps the students identify some of the career opportunities that are available to science majors including academics, industrial and governmental careers.
The student affiliate chapter is involved in many areas in and around the Lander campus. The chapter has three major areas that are concentrated on during the academic year. The areas include service to Lander University and the surrounding Greenwood community, professional development of the students, and social and recreational activities.
Service projects include Habitat for Humanity, litter pickup and cleanup at Lander and in the Greenwood community, blood drives, food drives, Humane Society, and other volunteer opportunities that the students are interested in doing.
Professional development includes chemical industrial plant tours (FUJI, Solutia, etc.), chemistry demonstrations at Lander and local elementary and high schools, judging science fairs in the community, and attending meetings of the Western Carolina chapter of the American Chemical Society which includes seminars by invited speakers and dinners at other universities in SC and NC.
Social and recreational activities are intended to provide the students with the opportunities to get together with faculty members on an informal basis and to provide interactions between all students in a relaxed atmosphere. These include white-water rafting trips, camping, several potluck lunches and dinners during the academic year, end of the semester picnics at Lake Greenwood, intramural sports at Lander, and meetings at Lander.
There is a tradition of excellence for the Lander University's Student Affiliate Chapter of the American Chemical Society (SAACS). It has once again proved that it has "the right stuff" by being classified as outstanding within a national group of its peers. Student Affiliate chapters are evaluated at the end of every academic year and the top chapters in the country are selected to receive awards. The Society's Committee on Education annually selects individual chapters to receive special recognition on the basis of their programs and activities. Awards are classified as Outstanding, Commendable, and Honorable Mention. There are over 980 chapters in the United States and approximately 20 % are recognized for achievement every year. Approximately 4% or 40 out of the over 980 chapters are recognized as Outstanding each year. Lander's chapter has been recognized as Outstanding 16 times in the past 25 years while receiving an award each year.
Lander's 2007 - 2008 chapter president, Chris Vaughn, and faculty advisor, Dr. Ralph Layland, asociate professor of chemistry, along with the other members of the Lander University student affiliate chapter, will be honored March 22, 2009, at the Student Affiliates Chapter Awards program at the 237 th American Chemical Society's National Meeting in Salt Lake City, UT for their achievement.
Lander's chapter of SAACS is currently one of the most honored in the nation. Since its inception in 1983, Lander University has received 16 Outstanding awards, 6 Commendable awards, and 3 Honorable Mentions while receiving an award each year.
Student Affiliate Chapters are a wonderful idea. The students benefit, the University benefits, the community benefits, and the local industry benefits.
