South Carolina Arts Education Summit 2007

On March 22-23, the SCAAE, working with the SC State Department of Education, held the South Carolina Arts Education Summit 2007.    Held at the Columbia Museum of Art, the two-day event brought together recognized leaders in arts education representing schools, organizations, and agencies from across the state.   Using the results of the arts education survey administered by the SCAAE in February, the group began a dialogue discussing the current conditions of arts education initiatives in the state.

Early in the process, the decision was made to review the report issued by the Transition Leadership Team of Jim Rex, the new State Superintendent of Education for South Carolina.   Committees were formed to examine the five areas identified in the report as being crucial to improving South Carolina’s schools.   These were accelerating innovation; reforming accountability to ensure success; expanding choices for parents and students; promoting fair and equitable school funding; and elevating and reinvigorating the teaching profession.   Before the conclusion of the summit, each committee reported the results of their preliminary work with comments and suggestions then being made by the entire group.   At the close, each committee was given the charge to continue work on their focus, formulating a strategic plan that can be of use to the arts education community of South Carolina in working together to ensure that a ll South Carolinians will have access to a comprehensive education, in and through the arts, that develops creativity and prepares them to be innovative contributors to the global society.

WASHINGTON, D.C.—The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts announced the recipients of its national awards program that honors outstanding school arts programs.   Five schools are being recognized as a Creative Ticket National School of Distinction for the 2006-2007 school year.   The award recognizes schools that have done an outstanding job of making the arts an essential part of of their students’ education.   Each school will receive a monetary award to support their arts education program.

The awards program is an initiative of the Kennedy Center Alliance for Arts Education Network (KCAAEN), a coalition of 36 statewide, not-for-profit organizations that work with the Kennedy Center to ensure that the arts are an integral part of American education.   The KCAAEN brings together educators, school administrators, parents, cultural leaders and citizens from across the nation.   The winners of the award were selected from the schools identified by their State Alliance for Arts Education as Creative Ticket Schools of Excellence.   Selection criteria at the national level included a review of the ways in which arts education is an essential component of the school curriculum; how the program creates and uses imaginative learning environments for teaching and learning in, through and about the arts; how the arts program provides opportunities for parental involvement in education; how the program provides opportunities for learning about other cultures through the arts; and how the program links arts education to community cultural resources.

Documentation of Action Research pertaining to Arts Integration

In 2004, the SCAAE formed partnerships with Lady’s Island Middle School and Beaufort High School in the Beaufort County School District (Beaufort, SC); the Masters Program in Divergent Learning at Columbia College (Columbia, SC); and the Tanglewood Project, funded by a three year U.S. Department of Education Partnership Grant, at Tanglewood Elementary (Greenville, SC) in documenting the use of arts integration in the classroom, including both the strategies used and the subsequent impact on student achievement. In the current climate where arts programs are threatened by inadequate funding and the need of administrators to demonstrate the effectiveness of their programs and curricula, the SCAAE saw an opportunity to develop tools that both administrators and teachers could use to document their successes through the use of arts integration in their classrooms. Through new partnerships that were established with these schools and institutions currently engaged in innovative projects utilizing arts integration, the SCAAE is seeking to offer a program of high quality professional development that documented the processes being implemented in and the assessment of those programs.  While the full report is scheduled for release in January of 2006, a preliminary report from 2 of the sites is available here.

 Kennedy Center Teaching Artist Seminar
May 31 - June 1, 2007

“Planning Effective Arts-Integrated Residencies for Students,” was first offered last Spring in Greenville. Due to the enthusiastic response from teaching artists in attendance, the SC Arts Commission and SC Alliance for Arts Education were excited to once again provide this valuable opportunity. The seminar coincided with the Spoleto Festival, and attendees were furnished a ticket to a Spoleto performance as part of the training package.

About the Seminar: The two-day Seminar is designed help teaching artists develop their skills in planning arts-integrated instructional residencies for students. The Seminar provided an opportunity for artists to:
1. Know the purpose and components of arts-integrated instructional residencies.
2. Examine and apply a 5-step process for planning arts-integrated instructional residencies for students.
Through activities and facilitated discussions, participants consider the Seminar content and apply the planning process to their own work. An overview of the sessions is attached.

Funding: The seminar wassupported by a grant from the Kennedy Center Alliance for Arts Education Network, which allowed the SCAAE and SCAC to provide a $550 scholarship to each selected participant. This included the entire seminar fee, lunch on both days, a ticket to one Spoleto event and 50% subsidy for those who stay at the designated hotel.

South Carolina District Arts Coordinators Institute :

On February 15-16, 2007, the second annual South Carolina District Arts Coordinators Institute was held at the South Carolina Governor’s School for the Arts and Humanities in Greenville.   With a goal of improving communication and collaboration among district arts coordinators across South Carolina, this year’s institute proved to once again be a resounding success.    During the institute, arts liaisons had the opportunity to hear from various heads of arts organizations, to explore each arts area, to learn about fine arts facilities and construction, and had round table discussions.   The SCAAE thanks the State Department of Education and the SC Governor’s School for their support in helping to sustain the work of the South Carolina District Arts Coordinators!
