Kennedy Center/National Symphony Orchestra Summer Institute

June 22 - July 26, 2010

Every summer, approximately 70 students (ages 15-20) from all over the nation meet in Washington, D.C., to attend the National Symphony Orchestra's Summer Music Institute. The Institute offers four weeks of private lessons, rehearsals, coaching by National Symphony Orchestra members, classes, and lectures to prepare aspiring musicians for their futures in music.   The Summer Music Institute is coordinated by the National Symphony Orchestra Education Program, which is a component of the Kennedy Center Education Department.   Participants are selected through an application process.   In South Carolina, the SCAAE serves as the state contact, beginning the process by screening the applications and then forwarding up to five to the National Symphony Orchestra for the final selection.

Kennedy Center/National School Board Association Award

The SCAAE, as part of the Kennedy Center Alliance for Arts Education Network (KCAAEN), is pleased to participate in the KCAAEN and National School Board Association (NSBA) award program to honor school boards that have demonstrated support for and commitment to high-quality arts education in its school district, community, state or special jurisdiction.   Begun in 1988, this award recognizes districts that have included all four major artistic disciplines – visual arts, music, theater and dance in their programs.    School districts that meet the criteria below are invited to apply for the state award.   Nominations of those receiving the state award will then be forwarded by SCAAE for consideration for the national award.

  South Carolina Arts-focused School Directory

In October of 2008, the SCAAE in partnership with the SC Arts Commission and SC Department of Education began work on assembling a directory of arts-focused/centered schools in the state.    Notices were sent out inviting schools who self-identified as having an arts-focused curriculum to participate in this project by completing an online survey.     Work is now in progress in the formatting of the gathered information into the first release of the directory which will be available online late summer of 2009.

The SCAAE and its partners see this document as being a living document and therefore invite those schools that have not completed the survey and wish to be part of the directory to take the survey and be added to the directory.   The Arts Schools Directory Survey is available at http://www.zoomerang.com/Survey/?p=WEB228HDHRC9J3 .

As you must complete the survey in one session, a link to a snapshot of the entire survey has been included to help you gather all of the pertinent information prior to beginning( click here ).     You can also preview the survey on the Zoomerang site and complete it at a later time.
