Scholarships

The William Preston Turner Department of Nursing offers the following scholarships to students majoring in nursing.

 

American Legion Forty & Eight Nursing Scholarship – Greenwood Unit

A scholarship in nursing given by LaSociete des 40 Hommes 435 et 8 Chevaux, Voiture 435 of Greenwood.  Applicants should demonstrate good scholastic performance and have financial need.  Preference is given to a resident of Greenwood or Laurens counties.  Recipient must accept employment in a professional capacity for one year in either Greenwood or Laurens County following graduation. 

 

American Legion Forty & Eight Nursing Scholarship – Newberry Unit

A scholarships in nursing given by La Societe des 40 Hommes et 8 Chevaux, Voiture 435 of Newberry.  Recipient must be a Newberry County resident (graduate of Whitmire, Newberry or Mid-Carolina High School), sophomore status in the nursing major with automatic renewal based on meeting Department of Nursing progression requirements.  Recipient may apply to the Department of Nursing for a scholarship; however Newberry County resident students who have not applied for a nursing scholarship are also eligible to be considered.

 

Ruth Childres “Monk” Buchanan Memorial Scholarship

Established in 1993 in memory of Ruth Childres “Monk” Buchanan by her family.  Scholarship awarded annually from fund income to a senior nursing student based on class ranking from his/her junior year.  Recipient must demonstrate outgoing personality and outstanding clinical nursing skills with a strong commitment to the nursing profession.

   

Nahn Joo Chang Nursing Scholarship

Established in 2000 by Professor Nahn Joo Chang to support students who are preparing for a career in nursing.  The scholarship is awarded annually to an entering freshman who meets the criteria for “Prenursing”. Requirements include a minimum score of 1000 on SAT; or other equivalent standardized test score; record of citizenship as evidenced by active participation in extracurricular activities and civic organizations.

The scholarship will be awarded to a prenursing student following completion of at least 12 hours of earned academic credit with a Lander institutional grade point average of 2.6 or above and continuation of prenursing status. 

  

Nancy Saxon Clark Memorial  Nursing Scholarship

Established in memory of Nancy S. Clark, Class of 1956, to provide a nursing scholarships to a junior nursing student who ranks in the top quarter of the class. 

 

Annie Laurie Crawford Memorial Nursing Scholarship

Established in 1995 from funds from the estate of Annie Laurie Crawford.  The scholarship is awarded to a senior nursing student with at least a Lander institutional  GPA of 3.0 who received a Level III on the ATI Mental Health Nursing Exam in Nursing 393 and demonstrates above average therapeutic communication skills.

 

Bob and Helen Eisenbeck Memorial Nursing Scholarship

Established in 1989 in memory of Bob and Helen Eisenbeck.  One scholarship awarded annually to a lower division nursing major who demonstrates financial need and academic success. 

 

Fifty Years Nursing Scholarship

In honor of Lander's Fifty Years of Excellence in Nursing Education, the Nursing Faculty has established the Fifty Year Nursing Scholarship to honor the Lander Nurses of 1957 - 2007.  The scholarship will be awarded to a junior or senior nursing major who exhibits the potential to enter the nursing profession as a registered nurse and also demonstrates financial need. 

 

David E & Joyce H. Hyde Nursing Scholarship

Established in 2006 by David and Joyce Hyde in observance of their 55th wedding anniversary.  The Hydes chose nursing as the focus area for their scholarship because nursing is an area of critical need and also because nursing care has a direct and close relationship to people with special needs, another area of particular interest to the donors.  Scholarship will be awarded annually from fund income to a full-time Lander student majoring in nursing and having the greatest financial need.  Scholarship is renewable provided recipient remains a full-time student and maintains at least a Lander institutional GPA of 2.7.

 

Larry and Barbara Jackson Nursing Scholarship

Established in 2007 by Dr. Usha Menon, class of 1992, in honor of Dr. Larry and Barbara Jackson.  Scholarship is to be awarded on merit. 

 

Lander University Alumni Departmental Scholarship

The Lander University Alumni Association provides fourteen $500 scholarships each year for a student in each department  with academic ability and financial need.  The scholarship is renewable for up to three years as long as the recipient maintains a minimum Lander institutional cumulative GPR of 2.60. 

   

Agnes M. Luddy Nursing Scholarship

Established by friends, alumni and colleagues upon her retirement in 1984.  Awarded annually to a senior nursing student who demonstrates an above average clinical performance as compared with peers in orthopedic rehabilitative or geriatric nursing.  Minimum Lander institutional GPR of 3.0 and evidence of strong commitment to the nursing profession.

 

MacDonald/Luddy Memorial Nursing Scholarship

Established in 1985 to honor the profession and practice of community health nursing.  Awarded to a senior nursing student with a record of active participation in student or professional organizations and an interest in community health nursing.  Lander institutional cumulative GPR not less than 2.80. 

 

Orvy and Jessie May Nursing  Scholarship

Established in 1990, in memory of Orvy and Jessie May by family and friends.  Scholarship will be awarded to an entering freshman and is renewable provided recipient maintains a Lander institutional  GPR of 2.6.  Recipient will be selected on merit, need, and citizenship.

 

Nursing Alumni Scholarship

Established in 1992 by the nursing faculty to recognize and support professional development through BSN degree completion.  Recipient must be a licensed registered nurse, graduate of Lander University ADN or a NLN accredited ADN/diploma program, and demonstrates significant progress toward completion of Lander BSN.

 

Lydia Woodham Parrish Nursing Scholarship

Established in 2002 by Professor Lydia W. Parrish on her retirement to be given to an RN-BSN graduating senior who demonstrates potential for graduate study in nursing. 

 

Professional Medical Products Nursing Scholarship

Established in 1984 by Professional Medical Products of Greenwood.  Awarded annually to an outstanding nursing major (registered nurse or generic student in the upper division);  Greenwood country resident; and a minimum Lander institutional cumulative GPR of 3.0 or above. 

 

Janet A. Sipple Nursing Scholarship

Established by the Nursing Class of 1978 in honor of the chairperson of the Division of Nursing.  One or more scholarships awarded to a member of the graduating senior class with a Lander institutional cumulative GPR of 3.0 or above.  Demonstrates potential for graduate study in nursing.  The graduate must enroll in an NLN accredited graduate nursing program.

 

Nell Perry Squires Scholarship Nursing Scholarship

Established in 2000 by William H. Squires in honor of his wife who taught in Lander University’s School of Nursing from 1964-1971.  The scholarship will be awarded to a nursing major from South Carolina.  The recipient should have a minimum Lander institutional cumulative GPR of  3.0 and to retain the scholarship  should maintain a Lander institutional GPR of 3.0.

 

Pilot Club Nursing Scholarship

Established by the Pilot Club of Greenwood.  The scholarship is to encourage students into a field specializing in the treatment of brain disorders (neuro, psych, stroke, cancer).  Awarded to a junior or senior nursing student who demonstrates such plans and who maintains at least a Lander institutional GPA of 3.0 or above. 

 

Kimberly Lauren Trotter Memorial Nursing Scholarship

Established in 1997 by her parents.  Awarded to a junior or senior nursing student with a Lander institutional GPA of at least 2.6 or higher with interest in cardiac/intensive critical care or emergency nursing. 

 

Buddy & June Vanadore Nursing Scholarship

Established in 2005 by June Vanadore.  Awarded to a junior nursing student with a Lander institutional GPA of 2.6 or above, member in LUSNA.

 

Bessie Kate Edwards Young Nursing Scholarship

Awarded to a RN/BSN student or generic student.  Preference student to be employed in a geriatric nursing position.  Enrolled in one required NURN or NURS course.

  

Selection Process

To be considered for nursing scholarships, prenursing and nursing majors must complete an application form and return it with an attached current university transcript to the Department of Nursing Chair’s office by March 31 of each year. 

 

Application forms will be mailed to all current Prenursing and Nursing Majors by March 1

 

All entering Prenursing (freshmen) students are considered for scholarships without completing an application form. 

 

Scholarship awards are determined in late spring by the nursing faculty in accord with scholarship donor specifications.  Upon completion of the required paperwork from the Financial Aid Office, scholarship awards will be applied to the recipient’s education expenses for the succeeding academic year.
