Lander University Appoints Dean for College of Business

June 26, 2017

Lander University announced today that Dr. Barbara M. Wheeling has been appointed to serve as Dean of its College of Business. She will begin her duties at Lander on July 1.

Most recently, Wheeling served as Dean of Business and Professor of Accounting for Montana State University Billings, Wheeling has accumulated a wealth of experience in practically all aspects of the academic environment, including teaching, administration and leading successful accreditation efforts.

“We are extremely fortunate to have Dr. Barbara Wheeling join the Lander University family,” said Lander President Richard Cosentino. “Her track record is filled with one success story after another as she has leveraged her leadership abilities to advance initiatives.”

Wheeling earned a Bachelor of Science in Animal Science from North Dakota State University; a Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree from the University of Wyoming; and her doctoral degree in accounting from the University of Alberta in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.

Before joining Montana State University Billings in 2004, Wheeling taught at Southern Utah University and Colorado State University Pueblo. It was in the early days of her tenure at Montana State University Billings, however, when she began to develop her experience in administration. Her accomplishments there include:

  • Leading the university’s Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB) accreditation;
  • Spearheading the development and implementation of the College of Business’ strategic plan;
  • Managing the operating budget for the College of Business;
  • Negotiating degree competition programs with counterparts in China; and
  • Coordinating the development of new academic programs.

Wheeling’s time with Montana State University Billings was interrupted briefly in 2012 when she served as Associate Dean of Business and Associate Professor of Accounting at Emporia State University in Emporia, Kan. She returned to Montana State University Billings a year later.

Among Wheeling’s first priorities for Lander’s College of Business is reaffirmation of its AACSB accreditation. “Getting to know the people, processes and programs of the college and university are high priorities, initially,” she explained, “and one of the major goals is achieving reaffirmation of AACSB accreditation for the College of Business. We need to demonstrate how we are achieving the goals and strategies of the College of Business strategic plan. Investigating possible new programs and courses is also high on my list of priorities.”
