Lander’s First Lady Jessica Cosentino served as the hostess for the event, whose purpose is to raise funds for the Lander Lily Funded Scholarship, which was established last year and is awarded to students in the university’s Honors College.

Melody Brawner, the first recipient of the scholarship, was the main speaker at the luncheon. Pianist Jeremiah Grooms provided entertainment featuring favorite Christmas tunes and art student Molly Ott designed original pottery vases for table decorations. Both are also Honors College students.

Nancy Anderson Self, of Columbia, who is 103 years of age, attended the luncheon in the company of her son. A former school teacher, she and 36 classmates graduated from Lander in 1934. She is pictured exchanging greetings with student Molly Ott.

Myra Greene, director of Alumni Affairs and Annual Giving, said the term “Lander Lily” has been used by female students since the early days of the university, which was founded in 1872 as Williamston Female College, and it continued over the years. Greene, a 1978 Lander graduate, added, “We use the term to identify with the women who came before us.”

Greene encouraged alumnae and others to contribute to the Lander Lily Funded Scholarship by sending a donation to the Lander Alumni Affairs Office, 320 Stanley Ave., Greenwood, S.C., 29649.
