REED GALLO, Assistant Professor of Music, directs the Wind Ensemble and brass chamber ensembles, teaches applied trumpet, orchestration, conducting, brass methods, and introduction to music.

Dr. Gallo earned a B.M. in Trumpet Performance and a B.M.E. with honors from Kent State University, M.M. and Professional Studies Certificate in Trumpet Performance with honors from Temple University, and Ph. D. in Trumpet Performance and minor in Instrumental Conducting with honors from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

At the University of Illinois, Dr. Gallo was principal trumpet in the Symphony Orchestra, Opera Orchestra, Wind Symphony, New Music Ensemble, Brass Quintet, and other chamber ensembles. Major performances included principal on Gustav Mahler’s Symphony No. 5, Stravinsky’s Petrouchka and L’H istoire du Soldat. Dr. Gallo was also principal trumpet in the major ensembles at both Kent State University and Temple University. He has been a soloist with the Temple University Brass Choir and was the Brass Finalist for the University of Illinois Concerto Competition. His primary instructors have been Ron Romm (founding member of the Canadian Brass), Dr. Michael Ewald, David Bilger (principal, Philadelphia Orchestra), Dennis Najoom (co-principal, Milwaukee Symphony), Mark Gould (former principal, Metropolitan Opera) and Michael Chunn.

Dr. Gallo has extensive orchestral and solo experiences, having been a featured soloist at the Kmoch Festival in the Czech-Republic. He has given recitals and master classes at various colleges and universities and has toured both Europe and China as a soloist and in professional ensembles. Dr. Gallo attended Interlochen Summer Fine Arts Camp as the Ohio Governor’s Scholar winner. Dr. Gallo was the principal trumpet player of the Champaign-Urbana Symphony, Baroque Artists of Champaign-Urbana (BACH) and Prairie Ensemble. He has performed with the Florida West Coast Symphony, the Delaware Symphony, the Chamber Orchestra of Philadelphia, and the Cleveland Lyric Opera. Dr. Gallo has soloed with BACH on the Brandenburg Second Concerto, the Bach and Handel Chorale of Jim Thorpe, Pennsylvania, the Capitol Brass Quintet and Bryn Athyn Brass Quintet.

Prior to returning to graduate school, Dr. Gallo was Director of Bands and Chair of Music at Girard College Preparatory School in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Adjunct Professor of Music at Neumann College, and Director of Brass Studies at Bryn Athyn Cathedral School. Dr. Gallo directed his middle school concert band as the featured ensemble at the American Flag Raising Ceremony for the American Flag previously flown at “Ground Zero” in New York City after the Terrorist Attacks of September 11, 2001. He has directed the bands of Girard at the Lincoln Center in New York and at International Conferences. He has served on the faculty of various summer music camps, including Blue Lakes Fine Arts Camp, Illinois Summer Youth Music Camp, and Valley Forge Military Academy.

Dr. Gallo’s primary research topic was the pedagogy of Claude Gordon, esteemed trumpet methodology of the 20th Century; his other areas of interest involve the Baroque Trumpet and music, Russian Romantic music for trumpet, and early 20th Italian-American bands.
