Introduction to the MSDNAA!

Welcome to the LU MSDN AA information page.  The Math and Computer Information Systems department of Lander University has recently joined the Microsoft Developer's Network Academic Alliance.  This program is designed to give students and faculty in the technology field access to the latest operating systems, development tools, and libraries.  Microsoft's motives for such a program are clear in that they promote the use of their products, while providing faculty, staff, and students with tools that they might not get to work with otherwise.  The program works on a yearly subscription basis that is paid for by the department.  This means there are no costs for the end user.

What does this mean to me?

As a student or faculty member of the Math/CIS department you are eligible to install a number of Microsoft Products for free.  A full list of all products will be available shortly, but some of the products that will be available include:

All of Microsoft's Operating Systems - including Vista, Server 2003, and XP Professional

Visual Studio 2005 Professional

Visio 2003 or Visio 2007

Project 2007

Access 2003

SQL Server 2005

It is important to keep in mind that this software is being provided for academic use in the technology field.  This means that they will not provide the Office Suite as well as any other products that they feel do not fit with the goals of the Alliance.  This also means that these products are for your personal use.  Please do not make additional copies of the product for use by others.

How does the program work?

As a member of the Math/CIS department you will receive an email with registration information.  You will use the username, password, and link in the email to access our software distribution site. Note: You must use Internet Explorer to download the packages. From there you will find the software package you want to download and download a license for the package.  Certain packages are not available for download and will say by mail order.  If you wish to install one of these packages please see William Barnhill in LL 322 for the appropriate CDs.  If the package you selected is available for download follow the onscreen instructions to download the license.  Once downloaded simply run the license program and follow the instructions and the license will download the full software package to your computer where you can install it or burn it to a CD.

How do I get involved?

If you have not received an email containing registration information for the ELMs Software Distribution Site please see below for support contact information.

"Downloader" will not run!

If you attempt to download a package in Firefox, you will end up with a file named "Downloader".  If you right-click on this file and choose 'Rename' and add .exe to the end of the filename, you will be able to double click the file and continue your installation.  This is an issue with Firefox and the MSDN site and should not affect Internet Explorer users.

Questions, Comments, Suggestions

For any questions, comments, and/or suggestions please contact William Barnhill.  Do not contact ITS about this program.  They do not support this program, the Math/CIS department does.
