Earthquake that Effects the Library

Earthquake warnings are a rumbling sound reminiscent of the sound of a fast-moving railroad train. The tremors will follow soon after.

Immediate Response:

  • Do not call University Police
  • If time permits, evacuate all occupants to basement of the building.
  • Stand in doorways, crouch under sturdy tables-stay away from windows and out of large rooms in which ceiling will be more apt to give way.
Secondary Response:

  • When tremors cease, seek medical assistance via University Police 8911 or 9911, to attend to the injured and try to move them to a safer treatment location.
  • Contact a librarian if one is not there.
  • If the earthquake may have affected the structure of the building, a decision about closing should be made. Call University Police to close the building. If safe to do so, the University Police should do a walk through of the library on all three floors before locking the doors.
  • For the Dean, note 1) when the earthquake happened, 2) when or if the library was closed, 3) the number of students in the library when it was closed, and 4) who was contacted.
