Student Internet Access

Residence Halls

 

All Residence Halls have high-speed network access.  For specific instructions for setting up your computer and connecting to the network refer to the information listed below.

Students living off-campus can utilize dial-up access for getting onto the campus network and the internet.  

Computer and Operating System Requirements:
 

Computer Minimum Requirements for Students:

  • Processor: Pentium M 1.30 GHz

  • Memory: 256MB, 1DIMM, SDRAM

  • Hard Drive: 20GB, HD, 9.5MM, 4200RPM

  • OS: Microsoft Window XP

  • Networking components: 56k modem, 10/100 Ethernet card, 802.11b Wireless Card ( preferably integrated)

  • Removable media: 24-10-24X CDRW

  • Additional Software: Academic Office XP STD

  • Warranty: 3yr Parts and onsite labor

Computer Suggested Requirements for Students:

  • Processor: Pentium M 2 GHz

  • Memory: 512MB, 1DIMM, SDRAM

  • Hard Drive: 60GB, HD, 9.5MM, 4200RPM

  • OS: Microsoft Window XP

  • Networking components: 56k modem, 10/100 Ethernet card, 802.11b/g Wireless Card (preferably integrated)

  • Removable media: 24-10-24X CDRW

  • Additional Software: Academic Office 2003

  • Warranty: 4 yr Parts and onsite labor with Complete Care (no fault warranty)

  
 
RESIDENCE HALL SPECIFIC INFORMATION

 

Thomason Cottages:

  • Requires the use of the Cisco 678 ADSL Router which can be obtained from the Housing Office.
    • Instructions for installing the Cisco 678
    • Troubleshooting Cisco 678 connections
  • Cisco Clean Access installation required
  • Ethernet Network Hub and Ethernet patch cables also required for more than one computer*

Brookside, Lide and Williamston Residence Halls:

  • Requires the use of the Cisco 575 Long Reach Ethernet module which can be obtained from the Housing Office.
    • Instructions for installing the Cisco 575-LRE
    • Troubleshooting Cisco 575-LRE connections 
  • Cisco Clean Access installation required
  • Ethernet Network Hub and Ethernet patch cables also required for more than one computer*

Centennial Hall:

  • Plug Ethernet Patch cable from Network adapter and then into the Blue jack located with the telephone and cable TV connections.
  • Wireless Network also available
  • Cisco Clean Access installation required
 

Chipley Residence Hall:

  • Plug Ethernet Patch cable from Network adapter and then into the Blue jack located with the telephone and cable TV connections.
  • Cisco Clean Access installation required

*With the exception of Centennial and Chipley Halls, if there is to be more than one computer on the network at the same time, the student(s) in the room will need to buy an Ethernet network hub with enough ports to support the number of computers in the dorm room, and the appropriate number of Ethernet patch cables.  These items are available at the Lander University Bookstore, and computer supply stores.  Ethernet patch cables are sold in varying lengths and should be purchased in the length necessary to allow placement of the computer at the desired location.
