Alumni News 2005 - Present
From Tony Hernandez on July 5, 2006:
Hope all is well in Greenwood. It has been too long since I last was in contact.
Lisa and I are living in Conway. She is with a local law firm and I am a realtor in the Myrtle
Beach/Conway area. I spoke to Gary Adamo the other day. He and his wife are district attorneys with
a county near Lansing, MI. He has three girls now. On that note: No, Lisa and I do not have any
children. At least not human ones. We have been holding steady with two dogs and two cats for the
last 8 years. Email:

From Shane Cox on July 6, 2006:
I hope that all is well. This is Shane Cox. I am currently going through the M.A.T. program
at Clemson. In the fall I have a practicum where I am in school all day and then have classes after
school on Monday-Wednesday. In the spring I will be student teaching and taking 3 other classes on
top of that. Somehow I have to fit a graduate course into all of this. I hope that I can do it
sometime in the fall. It can be any of the social sciences. Email: scox@ctv.co
From Rebecca McNulty Schreiber (History) on March 24, 2006
Greetings from a long-lost Lander history alumna! I'm still in graduate school at the
University of Illinois at Urbana- Champaign. (Since the average for history PhDs is eight and a
half years in grad school, when I graduate next year, I'll only be a little bit behind!)
The immediate big news I'm writing to tell you is that I got a 2006 Spencer Foundation
Dissertation Fellowship for Research Related to Education. It's a very selective award (less than
ten percent of approximately 450 applicants were awarded fellowships), and it will let me
concentrate on finishing my dissertation (and finding a job) next year.
The other recent big news is that I got married on October 1, 2005 to Tim Schreiber, a
reference librarian at a community college in the area. We're also the proud parents of two cats,
Katya and Hermione. There are pictures of the wedding and the honeymoon (in Key West, FL) at our
website,
www.timbecca.com.
My dissertation is entitled "Education for Empire: Manual Labor, Civilization, and the Family
in Nineteenth-Century American Missionary Education." It traces the racialization of the manual
labor boarding school in Hawaii, Indian Territory, and the United States. I argue that educators in
Hawaii and Indian Territory viewed manual labor boarding schools as a means to raise racially
"inferior" people to equality with whites, and U. S. educators, reformers, and government officials
heralded them as a means of addressing racial, class, and gender divisions in nineteenth century
American society. Though the white elites and middle class eventually gave up on manual labor
education, however, native Hawaiian, American Indian, and African American graduates of these
schools used the knowledge they gained to work for the advancement of themselves and their
communities. (Can you tell I'm practicing for next year, when I'll be on the job market?)
Seriously, it's a great project and I'm really excited about it. It's also been a lot of fun
to research -- I've been to Chicago, Oklahoma, Worcester (at the American Antiquarian Society),
Washington DC, and Hampton, Virginia. My favorite trip, though, was the two months I spent in
Hawaii. (The sacrifices I make for my work.)

From Tiffany Smith (History 2001) on April 27, 2005
Wow!
It has been quite a journey since I graduated from Lander in 2001. I moved to Corvallis, Oregon
after graduation and worked as the Associate Director for the Baptist Student Union at Oregon State
University while beginning to pursue my Masters of Divinity in College Ministry at Golden Gate
Seminary. After a year of the lovely Northwest weather, I moved to New Orleans, LA to finish my
Masters at New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary. I will graduate on May 14, 2005 with my MDIV.
This summer I got the opportunity to study at Oxford University and tour Scotland and England. I
had an amazing time and could not get over the rich history that was everywhere. I have attached a
picture of me in front of John Bunyan's grave site. I have to agree with Jonathan Raffini
that Dr. Figueira's Medieval and Ancient World Classes helped to put me a step ahead in my Biblical
history classes as well. I am currently working as the Baptist Collegiate Ministry Intern at
Clemson University, while I complete the last semester of my degree program. I am waiting to here
about future employment opportunities. It is hard to believe it has been four years since
graduation. I hope that everyone is doing well! Hope to see or hear from you soon!Blessings,
