Before the Eyes of the World, an account of the 1968
Olympic Games
This in-depth study discusses the historical and political background of the 1968 Mexico City Olympics together with the multifarious controversies surrounding the Games themselves. Prof. Allen Guttmann of Amherst College states about Prof. Witherspoon's Before the Eyes of the World, "No one has discussed the 1968 games as thoroughly and as thoughtfully as Witherspoon."

Prof. Witherspoon teaches summer class on the year 1968
The course of
study entitled "1968: The United States and the World" focuses on the history and culture of
American life during the eventful year of the Apollo space mission, the Beatles' "White Album," and
the Civil Rights Movement. Music, film, books,and magazines are researched to relive this
period in U.S. history for Lander summer school students. Other events of that era include Martin
Luther King, the Olympic Games, and the Cold War.

Paquette to lead summer study tour
Dr. Jean Paquette and Dr. Alisa VanLandingham are leading a study tour to Egypt and Greece, May 8th through May 22nd this summer. An informational meeting outlining the summer study tour meets October 24 at 4 pm in LC-380. All interested persons are invited to attend; the study tour is not restricted to Lander University students.

selected for Lander's Distinguished Speaker Series
Dr. Kenneth Mufuka will speak on "Mugabe's Zimbabwe and the Reaction of Christian Churches" as part of the third annual Distinguished Speaker Series sponsored by the College of Arts & Humanities. His talk is scheduled for March 13, 2008, from 6:30-7:30 PM in the Barksdale Recital Hall, Room CC A250 at Lander University. The event is free and open to the public. Dr. Kenneth Mufuka will deliver the keynote address at the Zimbabwe Diaspora Forum in Johannesburg, South Africa, Dec. 7-9. The global conference is an initiative to develop strategies for the economy and future of Zimbabwe.

Figueira named to national evaluator panel
The American Historical Association (AHA), the foremost national professional association of historians in the United States, has named Professor Robert C. Figueira to a nationwide panel of external evaluators of history departments. Dr. Figueira will join five other historians on the panel to be utilized by baccalaureate institutions.

Figueira co-edits South Carolina Proceedings
Dr. Robert Figueira of Lander University and Stephen Lowe of the University of South Carolina are co-editors of The Proceedings of the South Carolina Historical Association for 2007, in association with the South Carolina Department of Archives and History in Columbia. The Proceedings are composed of refereed papers presented at the annual meeting of The South Carolina Historical Association on European, Asian, U.S., Southern and South Carolina history.

Plenitude of Power The Doctrines and Exercise of Authority in the
Middle Ages
: Essays in Memory of Robert Louis Benson (Asgate Publishing, 2006), a newly released
collection of essays that examines the structure of power within medieval institutions.
