Why Major in History?
Students major in history because the rich tapestry of the past stirs their interest in the human condition. Students also study history as a discipline to train the mind, to prepare for citizenship and to establish a foundation for professional careers. History students at Lander become more questioning and analytical. In writing about history, they learn to organize ideas and to communicate effectively.
Lander's history majors go on to successful careers in middle and secondary school teaching, university teaching, law, the ministry, public administration, city planning, the armed forces, business and other professions. They are admitted to graduate programs across the nation and successfully complete those programs. They apply their education to public service and citizenship. And, of course, they savor the reading of history as a lifelong activity.

Why Minor in Philosophy?
Philosophy is not so much a field of inquiry as it is a vital engagement with all fields of inquiry. Although philosophy is the heart of liberal education, philosophy also investigates the foundations of all disciplines of study. Students minoring in philosophy not only learn to recognize philosophy as the unification of all human knowledge but also develop facility with widely diverse and different methods of inquiry. Undergraduate courses in philosophy are notable in their emphases upon the acquisition of skills and methodologies for problem-solving in all areas of human endeavor.
Whether you plan to major in the Humanities, Social Sciences, Business, Education, or the Fine Arts, your philosophy courses will complement your major by providing the tools for insight, analysis, interpretation, and imagination for your chosen field of study. The philosophical aspects of literature, psychology, history, sociology, and the physical sciences are obvious upon a moment's reflection. Indeed, the study of philosophy is directly sought by professionals in law, medicine, social service, business, public administration, law enforcement, journalism, Foreign Service, and elsewhere. If philosophy appears interesting to you, you are encouraged to discuss your interests with a faculty member in philosophy.
Students minoring in philosophy can integrate successfully into their careers a spirit of the
life of excellence, Aristotle's phrase for "living well and doing well in the affairs of the
world." Many persons feel a need to relate their career development to their own personal
enrichment, and the coursework in philosophy uniquely establishes solid meaning to these life
processes.
