Learning Beyond the Classroom
Reading, writing, and speaking Spanish within the secure confines of a classroom is one thing
-- attending the theatre in Barcelona or asking for directions in Mexico City is quite
another. There's no doubt that the best way to get a healthy dose of a culture is to plant
yourself right in the middle of that culture for an extended period of
time.
While several state-supported colleges and universities in South Carolina allow student to
specialize in Spanish and some offer opportunities for study abroad, only Lander requires its
Spanish majors to spend at least six weeks abroad in an approved program of study.
Expenses for this immersion may be offset through financial aid provided by the Lander
Foundation.
Lander also periodically offers study trips to Latin American countries, giving students an
opportunity to visit museums, galleries, theatrical productions, ancient ruins and other historical
sites, and to interact daily with residents of the area.
A bit closer to home, Lander Spanish majors will have opportunities to polish their language
skills as they interact with international students on campus and perhaps volunteer with various
organizations in the Greenwood area that help meet the needs of the fast-growing Hispanic
population.
