Since I was in middle school I have dreamed of becoming a physical education teacher. When I visited Lander University I knew it was the perfect fit for me. I chose Lander because it offers an exceptional physical education program, with top-of-the-line professors and great facilities for learning. Lander has so much to offer to students: a beautiful campus, helpful professors and it is located in the perfect college town. As a physical education major I have performed my clinicals in the Greenwood public schools. This has given me the opportunity to gain skills and hands-on experience that has helped me on my journey to become an educator. I am a Teaching Fellow at Lander and a member of the leadership team for the Physical Education and Exercise Science Club. Being involved in these organizations has encouraged me to become a more disciplined student, a stronger leader and a more confident individual. Upon graduating I know that I will be more than prepared as an educator and that is because of the Physical Education Department at Lander University.

Lander offers the ideal learning environment because of the small setting students find themselves in, and because of the helpful faculty and staff. As an athletic training major, Lander has allowed me to grow over the few short years I have been with the university by allowing me the clinical experiences I gain working with the Lander sports team, as well as partnering high schools in the local area. Through these experiences I feel that Lander has provided me a quality undergraduate degree that will help advance my growth both as a professional and as a person.

I chose Lander because of its small size and low student-to-faculty ratio. The faculty and staff have enhanced my experience at Lander by making themselves available throughout the day, being eager to answer any questions I may have, and by striving to help me be successful in everything I do. As an exercise science pre-occupational therapy major, I have been given the opportunity to visit several allied health offices in Greenwood and learn more about my future career path. At Lander I serve as a Resident Assistant and president of Baptist Collegiate Ministries. I am a member of both the Blue Key and Alpha Chi honor societies and I am involved with Fellowship of Christian Athletes and the PEES Club. I enjoy being a part of each of these organizations because they allow me to experience the diversity that can be found on this campus and challenge me to step outside of my comfort zone.

I chose Lander University because it has one of the best psychology programs in South Carolina, and several of my closest mentors recommended the school. Lander offers a unique experience that allows students to interact with professors on a level that is not universally available at larger institutions. The instructors have a lot of knowledge about their respective fields, and each offers an interesting and unique perspective. The students, too, are incredible and I am grateful to be surrounded by some of the most intelligent and talented peers I have ever met. I enjoy working as a teaching assistant for the department, and the experience I have gained has been invaluable. I am also a member of Psi Chi, the International Honor Society in psychology, and I will serve as president of Lander’s chapter next year. During my time at Lander, I have gained knowledge and skills that will help lead me to a successful career.

When searching for schools, it was important for me to find a university that was small enough to promote mentoring relationships with faculty, but large enough to provide diverse opportunities to further my academic career. I chose psychology as my major because I am interested in studying human attitudes and behaviors, and I have a genuine desire to help people through research and counseling. As a psychology major, I have held leadership roles in Psi Chi, represented my department within Student Government, served as a Teaching Assistant and conducted independent research. My leadership experiences, combined with the guidance and support from my professors, have helped me develop into a well-rounded student and individual.

From the first time I toured Lander University I knew it was the university for me. I have always had a passion for helping others and teaching special needs seemed like the perfect opportunity. My experience here at Lander has helped me acquire in-depth knowledge of the teaching field and receive a more hands-on education. I get to experience real classroom settings and work with special needs students. My professors have given me all the tools and knowledge I need to go out and teach others. Being a member of the Student Council for Exceptional Children, I have gained a deeper knowledge of special education and seen the challenges that teachers face. Going out into the schools, I feel confident in accepting any challenges that I may face. Lander has taught me how to be a leader, a teacher and a lifelong learner.

I chose Lander because its College of Education produces some of the best teachers in the state of South Carolina and it is accredited by the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education. I have been able to get beneficial experience as president of the Palmetto State Teachers Association. I am also involved in many other organizations here on campus such as being a member of the student life council, the Lander Presidential Leadership Academy, University Singers, Old Main Singers, Fellowship of Christian Athletes and Baptist Collegiate Ministries. Here at Lander, I have been able to study at an enhanced level by being an Honors International student. Lander is a small school that allows for great interaction with so many different people, which has helped me establish better communication skills.

I am from a little town in Mexico called Ciudad Valles which means "City of Valleys." I am an early childhood education major, and I chose Lander because my sister graduated from this institution and she recommended it to me. I chose my major because I love working with children, whether it is teaching them or just playing with them and having fun. I began my higher education at a technical college and then transferred to Lander after two years. The transition was very smooth and I immediately began taking early childhood education courses. At first I was not sure about the major I chose. I heard many people talk about job uncertainty for teachers and I also doubted my own capabilities in that profession; but, the professors at Lander had a passion for teaching children, which had an impact on me and influenced my outlook on teaching. Because of their passion, I know that teaching is not about the paycheck, it is about the opportunity you have to make a difference in someone’s life, no matter how young they may be. Lander has helped me develop as a person and has opened many opportunities for me to become the best teacher I can be.
