For more than 90 years, teachers have studied and implemented the Montessori method of education. Lander University has become part of this great tradition and offers a program of Montessori education leading to a career in Montessori education at either the preschool (ages 2 1/2 - 6) or early elementary (grades 1 -3) level.
The academic phase of the course begins in January and ends in July. The internship is completed the following year.
Our purpose is to prepare Montessori teachers that observe children closely and, on this basis, prepare learning environments, use materials with precision and care, and identify and respond to children's learning styles and their emotional and social needs.
Some unique features of the Lander University Montessori Teacher Education Program include:
-
Understanding Montessori teacher education as a transformative experience. Learning to view and understand children in new ways involves providing teachers with coaching and mentoring support during a challenging learning experience.
-
Experienced faculty, some with more than thirty year of teaching experience, offer a rich background from founding schools to holding doctoral research degrees.
-
Course of study challenging teachers to develop and define their role as lifelong learners.
-
Course of study that follow a logical progression of concepts and skills learned through a hands-on discovery and a collaborative set of approaches.
-
Curiosity, creativity, independent thought clarity, incisiveness of thought, tolerance for ambiguity, problem solving, time and resource management and working hard. Together, these are some of the qualities of excellent teaching practices.
