GENERAL INFORMATION 

 
Lander University encourages its students to experience another culture at first hand by living and studying abroad.  By careful planning, students who study abroad can maintain steady progress toward Lander graduation by taking courses abroad that count toward their curriculum requirements.

 

Study abroad programs are open to students in all majors and to students who have not yet chosen a major.  Students who have completed at least one semester of study at Lander are eligible to participate in Lander's faculty-led study tours which are scheduled at spring break and in the summer.  Students who wish to spend a semester abroad should have completed two semesters at Lander.  Note that a GPA of 2.8 is required for study at the University of  Northampton and a GPA of 3.0 is required for study at the University of Winchester.  Each of these universities require a  recommendation from Lander.  The programs sponsored by Academic Studies Abroad (ASA) require various GPAs as noted on the ASA website.

   

For students who wish to spend a semester abroad, we recommend University of Northampton in central England or the University of Winchester in south central England. Students who need to enroll in science courses while studying abroad should confer with Dr. Paige Ouzts about studying at the University of Sussex in southeast England.  Students should note that academic customs and patterns of study in universities in other countries are somewhat different from those in the United States.  For a discussion of the pattern of academic life in the United Kingdom, click here.

Since 2004, twenty-eight Lander students have studied for a fall or spring semester at a university in England or in Spain.  Lander students have also participated in summer programs at Cambridge and Northampton and Barcelona and have attended language institutes in Latin America.

 

Approximately 100 students took part in Lander's original Honors International Program (1988 - 1994) that required a semester at the University of Plymouth, England.  Lander's new Honors International Program (HIP) requires four 3-hour honors seminar courses at Lander and six hours of study at an institution abroad.  A $1000 Honors Study Abroad scholarship is provided to each student during their semester abroad.  Entering freshmen and current Lander students with strong academic records may enter the program in the fall or spring semester.  Students who wish to consider joining this exciting program should contact Dr. John Moore.  For additional information about the Honors International Program, please click here .

   

Elementary Education students have the opportunity to do their student teaching practicum in England through the University of Brighton.  Interested Lander students should contact Professor Jill Hunter (jhunter@lander.edu).

 

Spanish majors are required to include travel and/or study in a Spanish-speaking culture.  Spanish majors should consult their faculty advisors regarding this requirement.  The Director of Study Abroad will assist the Spanish faculty and their students in arranging for this study.

LANDER IS NOW AFFILIATED WITH

The Academic Studies Abroad (ASA) organization sponsors both semester and summer programs in over a dozen cities in Argentina, Australia, Chile, England, France, Ireland, Italy, and Spain.  Courses are taught in both English and in the local language.  ASA specializes in small programs and lots of personal attention for its participants.  For more information, click here.

Dr. Dava O'Connor traveled with her class to Rome, Venice, and Florence during the 2008 spring break.  They observed classes in various Italian schools.

RUGBY CLUB TRAVELS AT SPRING BREAK

 

Coach T. D. Maze and part of the Lander team spent their 2007 spring break at the University of Northampton practicing and playing against the Northampton team.  They also travelled to the University of Winchester to play a match.  The club is planning a 2009 spring break trip abroad.

CONTINUES ITS COOPERATION WITH

THE UNIVERSITY OF WINCHESTER  

    

Lander and the University of Winchester (England) have an academic cooperation agreement which UW gives Lander students a tuition reduction if they choose to study there.  Sixteen Lander students have studied at UW during the last two academic years, and four more students will study there in the fall of 2008.

 

SEMESTER ABROAD RECOMMENDATIONS 

 

FALL OR SPRING SEMESTER - STUDY AT WINCHESTER

 

Winchester is a small city approximately 65 miles southwest of London.  It is one of the oldest cathedral cities in England.  It was the capitol city for Saxon and Norman kings and was the center of King Alfred's Wessex.  Jane Austen lived and wrote near here, and she is buried in Winchester Cathedral.  The University of Winchester is a small university of about 5000 students. 

 

Fall semester dates for 2008 are September 29 - December 19 (a five-day orientation session is held for international students just before the semester began).  A fall semester at Winchester costs a bit more than a semester at Lander, but study abroad scholarships are available.  Sixteen Lander students have studied at UW since the fall of 2006. 

 

Lander students may also study at Winchester during a spring semester.  The 2009 spring semester dates are February 9 - May 23 and this includes a month-long break at Easter which is ideal for travel in Europe.

SPRING SEMESTER - STUDY AT NORTHAMPTON

 

Northampton is a small city approximately 75 miles northwest of London.  It is a regional center and is centrally located for travel within England.  The University of Northampton is a small university of about 6000 students.  A special British Studies course is offered each spring for South Carolina students from Lander, Winthrop, and the College of Charleston.  Spring semester dates for 2009 are January 12 - March 27. 

 

A spring semester at Northampton costs a bit more than a semester at Lander, but study abroad scholarships are available. Eight Lander students have studied at UN since the spring of 2005.

SUMMER SCHOOLS IN ENGLAND AND SCOTLAND

 

The following opportunities for summer study at institutions in England and Scotland are recommended:

1. Lander regularly sponsors programs for undergraduate and graduate students in education at the University of Brighton during the summer semester. This university is located approximately 100 miles south of London on England’s south coast. Brighton is a major British holiday resort. Interested students should contact Professor Jill Hunter (jhunter@lander.edu).  
    
2. The University of Dundee (Scotland) has announced a new summer program to begin in 2008.  Two courses: Scotland and the Americas (3 credits) and Scotland on the Move (3 credits), room, field trips, etc. are included for about $3100.  Meals and airfare are not included.  Dates are July 14 to August 1, 2008.  More information about this summer program.
     
3. The University of Sussex offers an extensive summer program for international students. This university is located in Falmer, only a few miles from Brighton, and about one hour south of London by train. More information about this summer program.
    
4. The University of Northampton offers a summer program for international students. This university is located about 75 miles north of London by train. More information about this summer program.
    
5. The University of Stirling has designed a special summer program to accommodate students from the United States and from other countries. The historic city of Stirling, is mid-way between Glasgow and Edinburgh in a very central location in Scotland. More information about this summer program.
    
6. Cambridge University offers a large number of courses in a special summer school format for international students. Lander students who have strong academic records (3.4 or higher GPA) are encouraged to consider this program. More information about this summer program.

SUMMER OPPORTUNITIES OFFERED BY OTHER SOUTH CAROLINA INSTITUTIONS

 

   

 

 

Arrangements have been made for Lander students to take part in some of the study abroad programs offered by Clemson University, the College of Charleston, and Winthrop University. Language study may be required of students who wish to study in countries where English is not the language of instruction. Application deadlines tend to be in February or March.

 

Here are some programs which do not duplicate Lander’s own offerings:

• Clemson in China - The College of Business and Behavioral Science at Clemson University offers a six-week program each summer.  After one week of touring cultural sites in Beijing, the program is based at the Dalian University of Technology. Each student will enroll for CHIN 499 Selected Topics in Chinese Culture (3 hours) and for one additional course (3 or 4 hours) in business management or in Chinese language. The program fee of approximately $3200 does not include meals in Dalian (inexpensive) or tuition ($400/hour) for 6 or 7 hours of Clemson credit. For more information contact  studyabroad@lander.edu 
• Trier, Germany - Clemson University offers a program focusing upon sustainable energy issues in environmental science at the Fachhochschule Trier each summer.  The cost is approximately $3250 + meals + Clemson tuition for 6 hours of credit (3 hours of environmental science and 3 hours of intercultural communications).  For more information contact  studyabroad@lander.edu 
• Art Studies in Italy - The University of Georgia's Lamar Dodd School of Art operates an Arts Studies Abroad Program in Cortona, Italy.  Semester and summer programs in Art Education, Art Education, Ceramics, Creative Writing, Drawing, Graphic Design, Italian Language and Culture, Interior Design, Jewelry & Metalwork, Landscape Architecture, Painting, Papermaking & Book Arts, Photography, Printmaking, and Sculpture are offered. LANDER FINE ARTS STUDY TOURS

 

Academic credit can be earned for the Fine Arts Study Tours sponsored by the College of Arts and Humanities each year.  Recent destinations have included Greece, Berlin & Munich, Vienna & Budapest, Sweden & Norway, Switzerland, Amsterdam & Copenhagen, Barcelona, the Borders of England and Scotland, Northern Italy, and Prague & Vienna.  Upcoming trips include  the western islands of Scotland (July 2008).  For more information on the upcoming Fine Arts Study Tours click here.

• BUNAC offers a range of working holidays including a summer camp counselling programme in the USA and Canada, flexible work and travel programmes to Canada, the USA, Australia, New Zealand, Britain and South Africa and volunteering/teaching placements. ATTENTION SPANISH MAJORS

 

Lander students who choose to major in Spanish are required to include travel and/or study in a Spanish-speaking culture as part of their curricula. Spanish majors should consult their faculty advisors regarding this requirement. Lander faculty regularly lead summer study tours to Spain and to Latin America. Lander can also assist students in arranging a semester of study at a university and/or language institute in Spain or Latin America.

 

 

A SPECIAL NOTE TO STUDENTS AND PARENTS

 

Lander University assumes that students who wish to study abroad are responsible individuals who can conduct themselves appropriately and manage their own affairs while traveling with a faculty-led study tour or while studying at an institution in another country. Each participating student must sign a liability release form releasing Lander University and its representatives from legal responsibility during their study abroad activities. The university requires that each student have insurance which covers major medical expenses and which provides repatriation expenses in case of an emergency. We recommend the policy available from Cultural Insurance Services International which costs $34/month (the cost is higher for students over 25 years old). CISI insurance is included in the cost of each summer study tour. Click here for more information about this insurance.

 

Study abroad programs usually involve expenses in addition to the regular expenses associated with attending Lander University. Students must also provide their own airfare to and ground transportation within their host countries. Additional personal travel or touring will incur additional expense.
