WELCOME TO
THE DEPARTMENT OF PHYSICAL SCIENCES

Before you begin to browse, let me tell you about the  Department of Physical Sciences.  We, the faculty of the Department of Physical Sciences, have two primary missions.  The first and most important mission is to provide excellent teaching through courses that are designed to support the various programs offered within the Department.  The second mission is to provide a variety of quality undergraduate research experiences that enhance the development of students as scientists and prepare them for post-graduate careers.

To support these missions, each faculty member is provided with a teaching laboratory and a research laboratory in a modern facility that is designed to support an array of technologies.   Each classroom is equipped with multi-media capabilities and connections to the Internet.  The University supports our missions by providing funds that have been used to purchase modern equipment.  The faculty members within the Department remain committed to raising new funds necessary to maintain this equipment and to support the research of its undergraduate students.  Our graduates are very competitive within the job market and in professional and graduate schools.

Our Department offers students an opportunity to earn degrees in chemistry and environmental science.  In addition to these degrees, we offer a dual degree program with Clemson University in chemical engineering.  Honors and minor programs are available in chemistry and environmental science.

Non-Degree programs in Pre-Dentistry, Pre-Medicine, and Pre-Pharmacy are available for students interested in professional occupations.  Students would major in chemistry and then take the required courses for admission into a professional school.   Offerings in physics and physical science are supportive courses for professional, pre-professional, and general education areas of study.

We also have prepared a presentation that we give to interested students and parents at Lander's Open Houses throughout the year.  Please follow the link to view this presentation .  After you have a chance to learn more about our programs, I encourage you to contact me or any faculty member of the Department by e-mail or phone.  Each of us is designated as an advisor for a specific academic program.  We will be most happy to answer any of your questions.

Sincerely,

Dr. Ralph C. Layland
