  • Lander and Fuji introduce local students to different scientific fields

    Lander University is playing host to young, would-be scientists during the annual Fuji Summer Science and Math Enrichment program. A class called The Magic of Chemistry attracted 22 students, rising 6th- through 9th-graders, who spent a week exploring a variety of chemical topics under the supervision of Dr. David Slimmer, dean of Lander's College of Science and Mathematics, and Dr. Ralph Layland, chair of the Department of Physical Sciences.

    Lander University is preparing to open an art exhibit featuring works by graduates of the university's Master of Arts in Teaching in art education program. The exhibit, which will open with a reception from 6 to 8 p.m., on Friday, June 21, will be on display in Lander's Monsanto Gallery through Aug. 1.

    Lander University will soon introduce two new graduate- level programs, pending approval of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools: a master's degree in Emergency Management and a master's in Nursing, Clinical Nurse Leader. Both would be unique to South Carolina.

    Lander University's College of Education has been reaccredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE). James Cibulka, president of the Council, said accreditation means the college and its programs meet rigorous standards established by the professional education community.

    Lander University will hold its annual Bearcat Fan Day in Uptown Greenwood on Thursday, June 20, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. The festivities will take place in the shadow of the university's 11-foot tall Bearcat topiary near Countybank Plaza.

    Lander University conferred degrees upon 313 graduates at the university's spring commencement ceremonies in April. Jim Shore, an award-winning S.C. artist, delivered the keynote address to a full house at Lander's Horne Arena. During the ceremony, Shore was awarded an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree, along with John Fulp Jr., owner and president of Vanguard Industries and former president of Abney Mills in Greenwood.
