Challenge Exams
Placement Tests -- What do I need?
These instructions will help clarify which placement tests students must take. The bullets below may make it easier for students to decide what to do. The regular math test, the pre-cal test, and the foreign language test (in Spanish, French, German, and Russian) are all on-line. Students are urged to take these assessments as soon as they receive their letter regarding the testing procedures. One retest is allow in math and pre-cal. The regular math assessment retest is only on-line thru web CT. The Pre-Cal retest is paper/pencil so these students should sign up for a retest time when they get to campus in the fall (or spring) by going to the Academic Success Center, LC 340.
Some students may be eligible to take an English Validation Essay[with SATV 680 or higher or ACT English 30 or higher]. These students should sign up in the Academic Success Center, LC 340, for a two-hour validation essay when they get to campus in the fall (or spring).
Foreign Language Placement Exam
- All new students (with NO college transfer credits in foreign language) should take the Foreign Language Placement Exam in the language they had in high school. The following link will take you to the foreign language testing site.
- Students with any foreign language college credit will not take the Foreign Language Placement Exam. They should alert the Director of the Academic Success Center, LC 340, when they get to campus to determine whether or not they have completed their General Education foreign language requirements.
- Students for whom ENGLISH is a SECOND Language are not required to take a Foreign Language Placement Exam and are exempt from the general education foreign language requirement for graduation. THEY should alert the Director of the Academic Success Center, LC 340, so their computer records can be properly coded.
- Students planning to take the Latin Placement Exam must see the Director of the Academic Success Center, LC 340 when they get to campus in the fall (or spring).
Math Assessment and Pre-Calculus
- Both the initial and retest for the regular Math Assessment are to be taken on-line using Web CT. Instructions can be found at:
- Pre-Calculus Retests must be done paper/pencil when they get to campus in the fall (or spring). Students should sign up for an appointment in the Academic Success Center, LC 340.
English Validation Essay
- ONLY students who have scored 680 or higher on their SATVerbal or 30 or higher on their ACT English are eligible to take the English validation Essay. This is a two-hour essay which is scored by the English faculty. Students will earn ENGL 101 credit with a passing score on this essay.
- Students should go to the Academic Success Center, LC 340, when they get to campus in the fall (or spring).
