Placement and Assessment: Which tests must I take?

This page is designed to assist you in determining which Mathematics Assessment tools you should complete or if you are exempt from this requirement.  It will also give you information about the Foreign Language Placement Exam that new students are required to take.

MATH ASSESSMENT REQUIREMENTS:

  • You must take the Mathematics Skills Assessment if:
    • You are an entering freshman; or
    • You are a Transfer student and you are not transferring in a mathematics course from another institution that is equivalent to one offered at Lander.
  • You must take the Precalculus Assessment if:
    • You will be a mathematics major at Lander; or
    • You are entering one of the three Dual-Degree Engineering programs with Clemson University through a Mathematics, Computer Information Systems, or Chemistry major at Lander; or
    • You would like to take Calculus to satisfy your General Education mathematics requirement.

MATHEMATICS SKILLS ASSESSMENT DESCRIPTIONS:

Precalculus Assessment:  Any student wishing to take calculus at lander University should take the precalculus assessment. All students pursuing a major in Mathematics (including Secondary Certification and Dual-Engineering programs), or entering the  Dual-Degree engineering programs in Computer Information Systems or Chemistry must cmplete the precalculus assessment. These majors require Calculus I (Math 131) and Calculus II (Math 132). You must have an adequate background in Precalculus (or Algebra III and Trigonometry) to succeed in the Calculus I courses.  The Precalculus Assessment is designed to help you and your advisor make the best decision regarding immediate enrollment in Calculus I.  If you have not had Precalculus (or Algebra III and Trig) or you need to improve your Precalculus skills, you should enroll in Math 114 prior to enrolling in Math 131.  Your score on the Precalculus Assessment will help you and your advisor determine if you need to review and/or improve your Precalculus skills.

The Precalculus Assessment covers topics in algebra and trigonometry. To complete the Precalculus Assessment, follow the instructions on the web site below:

Mathematics Skills Assessment:   Students in majors not requiring Calculus have a number of options for fulfilling a General Education mathematics requirement. The Mathematics Skills Assessment is designed to help determine if you have sufficient mathematics background to enroll in an algebra-based mathematics course. If the Skills Assessment shows that your algebra skills are weak, you may, depending on your major, be able to satisfy the General education requirement with a course not heavily dependent upon algebra.

A passing score for the regular math placement exam is 9 or higher. If you score below a 9, you will be able to access an on-line review then take a retest at your convenience but prior to the beginning of classes.

Foreign Language Placement Exam:  ALL NEW STUDENTS are required to take the Foreign Language Placement Exam in the language they had in high school.  The Foreign Language Placement Exam is available in Spanish, French, German, and Russian through a link to the on-line testing site.  PLEASE CLICK ON "PLACEMENT INSTRUCTIONS" TO ACCESS THAT PASSWORD-PROTECTED  SITE.  Students who have a foreign language background in Latin or other lanuages not listed above must go to Instructional Services, LC 340, for information about what to do.

It is strongly recommended that students review their foreign language skills prior to taking the Foreign Language Placement Exam to assure the best results.  The Foreign Language Exam in Spanish or French will place students into Spanish 101 or 102 or French 101 or 102 which will satisfy Lander's General education Foreign Language requirement.  A student may also "Pass" the Foreign Language Placement Exam which will exempt them from the General Education foreign language requirement and allow them to enroll in a 200-level Spanish or French course if they would like to do so.

Students for whom English is a second language are exempt from the General Education foreign language requirement, therefore, no test in foreign language is required.
