ASCAP

Academic Support Center Advisement Program

MOST FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS . . . . . . . .

How do students get to be ASCAP students?

Students are admitted though the ASCAP program because their predicted GPA places them into a high risk category. This may be that their SAT (or ACT equivalent) score is below 900 or their rank in class and high school GPA is low.

How and when are students notified about being admitted through ASCAP?

Students are allowed to declare their major but will have an ASCAP advisor from the Academic Success Center.  Typically, students are not aware that they are being advised by an ASCAP advisor because the ASCAP advisors follow the plan for their declared major.  However, careful attention is given to course selection and course combination so that students are able to improve their chances of success during their first two terms at Lander.

Does being in ASCAP cause students to get behind?

ASCAP students do not have to take any special coursework, but can follow their major recipe page found in the University Catalog.  After two terms, an ASCAP student may continue on to an advisor in their major.

So, what is the advantage of being an ASCAP student?

85% of all freshman tend to change their major.  Being in ASCAP works to the students' advantage because they have time to investigate majors and career options if they are not sure if the major they have chosen is right for them.  The ASCAP advisors will help the students follow the path that is more suited to them.

Since the Academic Success Center tutoring lab directors are the advisors to ASCAP students, we feel that students get an added incentive and encouragement to attend the tutoring labs.  Research shows that early and frequent peer tutoring helps enhance a course grade by as much as one full letter grade.

ASCAP advisors also offer careful advising, helping students steer clear of typical obstacles such as: taking a course combination that is too challenging for new students, working too many hours while enrolled fulltime, treating college coursework like high school coursework, and not using active study strategies.
