Alumni Newsletter - December 2008

Season Greetings!

It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas on the Lander campus. The Christmas decorations are out and the big wreath is on the bell tower of Laura Lander Hall. Exams begin on Monday, Dec. 8 and graduation is Saturday, Dec.13. Charles Bierbauer, an award-winning journalist and dean of the University of South Carolina’s College of Mass Communications and Information Studies, will deliver a motivational address to about 206 degree candidates. During the ceremonies, the university will confer an honorary doctorate of humane letters upon Bierbauer, who spent 20 years as a correspondent with CNN before joining USC, and upon Harris E. DeLoach Jr., chairman, president and chief executive officer with Sonoco Products Company in Hartsville, S.C.

DON’T FORGET LANDER WHEN MAKING END-OF-THE-YEAR CHARITABLE CONTRIBUTIONS

Over the past few months, you have heard a lot about budget cuts for higher education. It is true that allocated funds do not meet the needs of Lander University. Private support is vital to continuing our tradition of offering a quality education – one that is considered excellent in the competitive market. Please consider making a tax deductible contribution to the Lander Foundation by the end of the year. Your gift can be designated for scholarships, academic programs, alumni programs, athletics, the Recreation, Wellness, Sports complex or any other area you wish. Every gift is important; every gift helps shape the future! Your contribution will be used wisely, and know that your support will be deeply appreciated. HOMECOMING – FEBRUARY 20 & 21, 2009

The theme for this year’s homecoming is “Lander in Hi Def.” The theme is using the Feb. 2009 TV signal conversion going from analog to digital. Campus organizations will be incorporating TV sit-coms and other shows in their competitions. Homecoming brochures will be mailed right after Christmas. We will also send out another e-mail later this month with the schedule of activities. Please make plans to attend Homecoming and encourage other alumni to participate.

TRIVIA QUESTION

Congratulations to Wayne Craft ’81, Julie Gaines ’95 and Christina Morton Watson ’04 for being the first three to answer correctly that Samuel Lander died in 1904, the same year that Lander College opened its doors in Greenwood. This month’s question: What Greenwood native received a honorary doctorate at the December 2007 graduation. The first three correct answers will receive a Lander University Alumni Directory.
