Lander tops in student voter registation drive

Lander University registered a higher rate of new voters than any of 50 colleges and universities across the country that that completed what was called the Electoral Voices Project last fall.
Lander’s American Democracy Project (ADP) conducted the registration drive during the week of September 18 as part of the university’s Constitution Day observance. When the drive ended, Lander’s ADP had enrolled 268 new voters, nearly double the goal of 136 registrants that the sponsors of the campaign established based on campus size.
Lander’s percentage of new voters was higher than other larger schools including Indiana University at South Bend, Illinois State University, Ball State University, and College of Charleston.
The non-partisan registration project was a joint effort by the American Association of State Colleges and Universities (AASCU) and Young Voter Strategies. Their nationwide goal was to persuade 350,000 young people between the ages of 18 and 29 to register to vote in the 2006 election.
Dr. Robert Stevenson, assistant professor of mass communication and chair of Lander’s ADP chapter, said, “Our plan was to register students at Lander and continue the momentum of increasing the number of young people who vote.”
The American Democracy Project is co-sponsored by AASCU and the New York Times; its goal is to encourage college students to be active in civic affairs.
