POSITION
The dean reports to the Vice President for Academic Affairs and is the academic and administrative leader of the College of Arts and Humanities, which consists of five departments: Art, English and Foreign Languages, History and Philosophy, Mass Communication and Theater, and Music.
The responsibilities of the dean include but are not limited to: nurturing the professional growth of the college’s faculty as teacher-scholars; supporting performance-based assessments of the academic programs within the college; promoting and supporting the use of computer and other technologies central to the teaching/learning process; pursuing external funding for the departments within the college; managing personnel and budgets. In addition, the successful applicant must be goal oriented and able to work cooperatively and effectively with all university constituencies, and particularly with department chairs and the other deans of the Academic Council, which reports to the Vice President for Academic Affairs. The Dean must also function as an effective public advocate for the University in relations with the broader community.
QUALIFICATIONS
Required : Earned doctorate from an accredited institution; a strong record of quality academic teaching, scholarship and service sufficient to merit appointment at the rank of associate or full professor in one of the College’s departments; experience in incorporating computer and other technologies into courses and programs; commitment to excellence in undergraduate and graduate teaching.
Preferred : At least five-years of experience as a college/university department chair or higher; proven fiscal and personnel management skills; a proven record of meeting accreditation standards; a strong record of success in dealing with external organizations, including state and federal government, business and industry, and public schools; excellent leadership and communications skills, which include consensus building, objective decision making, and delegation of responsibility and authority; and a record of successful grant writing and fund raising.
