I am an international student from Zimbabwe majoring in chemistry with a minor in mathematics. I am a beneficiary of the Mufuka Foundation scholarship. My sponsors, Dr. Douglass and Mrs. Jean Mufuka, have trusted Lander for several decades to provide the best education and conducive learning environment for their students from Zimbabwe. I trusted their judgment and I’m glad I did. Lander has instructors who are really interested in the academic welfare of each of their students. My adviser and Calculus 1 instructors have had a profound effect on my academic life. They are very encouraging and always ready to answer questions. Outside the classroom, I work as a chemistry and math tutor at the Academic Success Center. After my graduation l would like to get my graduate degree in chemical engineering and Lander’s professional instructors are already preparing me for it. I would have never looked for a better place to learn and grow academically, socially and mentally than Lander University. Though Lander is not home, it feels like home!

After touring the campus and meeting some of the professors, I could tell Lander was the right university for me. And after being here for a while, I couldn’t agree more with my first impression. I chose chemistry as my major, and the program here has never let me down. The classes here are small, and the professors always have time to just sit down and talk, which is great, especially when you need help. I have had the opportunity to get to know each of my professors, who are all very encouraging and knowledgeable. Lander has provided me with many opportunities for advancement, and even scholarships to help fund my education.

The environmental science program has unlocked many doors of opportunity to fulfill my aspirations of being a well rounded student. In the past four years I have been a member, treasurer and president of the Environmental Science Student Organization (E.S.S.O.). This organization provides opportunities for students around campus to interact with other students from different majors who share the same interest in volunteer activities, community events and support for other organizations. In the environmental science program I have developed skills in understanding and resolving environmental challenges from the required courses, including chemistry, physics, geology, mathematics and biology. With my studies at Lander University, I have been able to apply the knowledge I have learned toward water quality research projects and working as an intern with D.H.E.C. Those skills will also help me with many other opportunities I may have approaching after graduation.
